I posted a bit the other day (here<\/a> and here<\/a>) about catching the\ntail end of the Jidai Matsuri (\u6642\u4ee3\u796d,<\/span> “Festival of the Ages”). Here are\nsome more from early on in what I shot.<\/span> (Having just returned from a long-weekend trip<\/a>, I'm pretty<\/span> much behind on everything.)<\/p>\n\n

When I first got out there, the parade had stalled for some reason, so\nI got<\/span> a long<\/span> opportunity to photograph the mounted archer seen above and in the second link<\/a>, and having\nnot failed to immediately notice my not-so-subtle 300mm f\/2<\/a>,\nhe pranced a bit<\/span> for the camera, which I really<\/span> appreciate. <\/p>\n\n\n

For something different, I went a<\/span> bit overboard on the post processing, recalling the similar treatment of a similarly<\/span>-mounted archer\n(but an actual archer instead of an actor) now hanging in a print<\/span> on my wall, as\nseen in\n“Dabbling in Some Fine-Art Printing for My Office<\/i>”<\/a>. It's not everyone<\/span>'s cup of tea, but I like<\/span> this kind of presentation.... occasionally.<\/p>\n\n

This photo illustrates just how thin the depth of field is at f\/2 at\n300mm.... his right eye is in perfect focus, but because his head is tilted\nslightly, the left eye is out of focus. Of course, it was pure luck that I\ngot<\/span> this... he and his horse were continually in motion.... and if they\nwould have paused, I would<\/span> have liked to focus on the other eye (generally,\nit feels more natural when the closer<\/i> eye is the one in focus).<\/p>\n\n

Now a few shots of some folks that followed once the parade started\nmoving. I was limited<\/span> mostly by there being but a few<\/span> angles where I could<\/span>\nget a reasonable<\/span> background, but the limited depth of field certainly\nhelped when the subject was close.<\/p>\n\n

In the photo above I was able to avoid washing out<\/a> the rich color of his robe, but was not able\nto keep the detail in the fabric without compromising the whole thing, but just to show what's there, here's a crop<\/span> of the same shot with the exposure brought way down....<\/p>\n\n
