Kyoto friend Zak Braverman<\/a>\nwas asked by his friend, pottery artisan Koji Kamada<\/a>, to take\nphotos of some recent pieces. Knowing I'm into photography, and of late\ntrying to up my game on artificial lighting<\/a>, Zak kindly<\/span> invited me along.<\/p>\n\n\n

I prepared everything I imagined I would<\/span> need for, well, what I imagined<\/span>\nI would<\/span> be shooting, but upon arrival I quickly<\/span> realized that my\nimagination differed significantly from reality, and we were totally unprepared. Specifically, I was unprepared<\/span> for 1)<\/b> the need for dark<\/i> backgrounds instead of white,\nand 2)<\/b> pottery that had direct reflections, like a mirror.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

We ended up cobbling together the most incredible kludges to try to get\nsome kind of reasonable lighting, all the while I could<\/span> feel the authors\nof “Light — Science and Magic<\/i><\/a>”\nrolling in their graves (which is all the worse because they're not even dead).<\/p>\n\n

We (or, at least, I) failed miserably for the kind of shots that they\nwere looking for, but I'll be much better prepared if I ever<\/span> get a chance<\/span>\nto do it again.<\/p>\n\n

Still, some of the shots are nice enough for the lower standards here at\nBlog Chez Jeff<\/i>, so here are a few<\/span> from today, starting with a\nbasketball<\/span>-sized pot that costs more than my camera...<\/p>\n\n
