Busy day today... caught the fringe of two famous Kyoto festivals. In the afternoon<\/span> was Jidai Matsuri<\/a> (\u6642\u4ee3\u796d<\/span>\n— “Festival of the Ages”), more or less a re<\/span>-enactment parade\nrepresenting the many periods Kyoto's long history. I caught<\/span> the tail end\nof the procession as it made its way past my place.<\/p>\n\n

(I'll post more another day, I'm sure, but in the meantime, for a\ndifferent<\/span> take on the genre, check out St\u00e9phane Barbery's photos from three years ago<\/a>, and\nfrom\ntoday<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n

In the evening was the Kurama Fire\nFestival<\/a>, which involves a lot<\/span> of fire being heaved and hoed by men\nwith bare buttocks. I'll save you from the bare buttocks, but there's\nfire'a'plenty in this shot of some very large (multi-story) torches being\nlit:<\/p>\n\n
