Finally getting that all-consuming project<\/a>\nthat I just<\/span> posted about off my back, I can now<\/span> return to my photos. Here\nare a few<\/span> from the ikebana (flower arranging) event I went<\/span> to a couple<\/span> of\nweeks ago at the Shoren'in Temple (\u9752\u84ee\u9662)<\/span> in eastern Kyoto. I'd managed<\/span> to\npost a few<\/span> shots earlier (in my “busy hallway<\/a>”, “cute and colorful scene\n<\/a>”, and “serene\nphotos<\/a>” posts).<\/p>\n\n\n

This event was related to the flower-arranging events that I post<\/span> about every\nyear<\/a>, but it was a special<\/span> event to mark the ascendancy of a new<\/span> head\nof all worldwide practitioners of this particular style of flower arranging.<\/p>\n\n

As usual, I was invited<\/span> by Arthur Brigham, whose daughters (second and\nfourth grade) were participating. The one above<\/span> is fourth-grade Monet's.<\/p>\n\n

The location, the Shoren'in Temple, is a wonderful<\/span> hidden treasure in\nKyoto, and the combination of flowers, temple, gardens, and kimonos\nprovided ample opportunity for me to keep filling my memory card and not want to leave.<\/p>\n\n

They're taking photos of the<\/i> main flower arrangements (presumably\nby the new head of school), given the high honor of being presented in the\nEmperor's private chamber. (The Emperor actually did pay a visit<\/span> ten years\nago, but I'd be surprised if a sitting<\/span> Emperor has used the room for its\nintended purpose in the last 150 years.).<\/p>\n\n

Those two arrangements weren't quite my cup of tea as much as the kids'\nones, but here they are in case they're your cup of tea...<\/p>\n\n

Notice that these photos are both ISO 10,000, both handheld, both with\nslow shutter speeds (with the second one being 125mm @ 1\/60th of a second<\/span>). The results<\/span> speak equally well to the D4's low-light ability, Lightroom 4<\/span>'s<\/span> render engine, and my ability to hold steady while taking a\nshot<\/span><\/a>. I was more<\/span> impressed by the D700's leap<\/a> in low-light ability\nover its predecessor than in the D4's bump over the D700, but better is\nbetter and that's what the D4 is.<\/p>\n\n\n
