Fourth-grade Anthony had his school Sports Festival today. Wanting to\nkeep my baggage to a minimum,<\/span> I chose<\/span> the Sigma “Bigma” 50-500mm\nZoom<\/a> for the day. I loved<\/span> this lens when I first<\/span> got it two and a half<\/span>\nyears ago, but it quickly developed CPU problems<\/a> that caused\nit to “freak out”. I ended<\/span> up having it replaced twice, and while the third\ncopy's CPU seemed okay, its image quality didn't really seem up to snuff, so I lost<\/span> interest.<\/p>\n\n

But, I picked<\/span> it today for its versatility, and paid the price. Halfway\nthrough the 1,102 photos I shot<\/span> at the sports festival, it started to fritz\nout again. When its CPU goes dark, the camera thinks that a non<\/span>-CPU lens is\nattached, and the default settings on my camera for a non<\/span>-CPU lens is for the\nmost-delicious Voigtl\u00e4nder\n125mm f\/2.5<\/a> (which sadly<\/a> does not have a\nCPU<\/span>).<\/p>\n\n

So, shots taken during these moments are severely<\/i> underexposed,\nas you see above.<\/p>\n\n

Of course, because I shoot in raw-sensor format (instead of JPEG), I can tap<\/span> into its latitude for\nexposure correction<\/a> and in Lightroom can recover from disasters<\/a> to\nat least some extent.<\/p>\n\n

Here are the three photos above, after having invoked Lightroom's “Auto\nTone” on them, and added a lot<\/span> of noise reduction:<\/p>\n\n

The quality is horrible, of course, and these particular photos are all\nthrow-away shots anyway, but it seems that all<\/i> the photos of when\nFumie did one of the silly events together with Anthony were ruined by the Sigma, so\nthis is the only way to have any photographic memory, which is a lot<\/span> better\nthan nothing.<\/p>\n\n

Shoot raw.<\/p>\n\n

And perhaps be wary of Sigma. My lens will<\/span> be on its way to them (for\nthe third time). I've owned only two Sigma lenses in my life, this 50-500mm\nand many years ago the 30mm\nf\/1.4<\/a>, which also went through three copies before I got<\/span> one that\nseemed reasonable. (That link<\/a>, to a post<\/span> about the\nlens six years ago, is quite the blast from the past for me, to back before\nLightroom when I painstakingly<\/span> processed each photo in Photoshop, without\nthe burden of skill.)<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
