The other day while my wife was preparing for her ballet recital<\/a>, I wandered<\/span> around the shrine complex across the street from the venue. That's\nwhere I snapped<\/span> the “Cute Little Melodrama in Five Photos<\/a>” sequence that I posted<\/span>\nthe other day.<\/p>\n\n

The direct sun made for harsh lighting that I just<\/span> didn't have the skill\nto deal with well, so from a technical<\/span> point of view these photos are crap,\nall lacking a certain<\/span> richness. I'll have to head back on a lightly<\/span>-cloudy\nday. Still, it's a pretty<\/span> area, so even crappy photos are not too bad to\nlook at....<\/p>\n\n\n

Nagaokakyo (\u9577\u5ca1\u4eac) has been around for a long<\/i> time... it served\nas the capital of Japan for short while, before the imperial court was\nmoved 10km northeast to Kyoto, 1,218 years ago. Not in<\/i> the year 1218, mind you, but 1,218 years ago<\/i>, in 794.<\/p>\n\n

Prior to being in Nagaokakyo, the capital had been in Nara for a while,<\/span> and prior to that had bounced around quite a bit,<\/span>\nbut it finally stayed put in Kyoto for a good<\/span> long while, for 1,074 years, before moving to Tokyo in 1868.<\/p>\n\n

I lived and worked in this city in the early 1990s, and walked by this\narea every day on my commute, but never<\/i> once stopped in to check it\nout. I have no<\/span> idea what I was<\/span> thinking, but I guess<\/span> it just shows how much\nphotography has opened my eyes to the beauty and interest of things around\nme.<\/p>\n\n

I was half way thinking to make this one of my “What am I?”\nquizzes<\/a> because the jumble of curved stone seems so implausible.<\/p>\n\n

There are actually three of those short highly-arched bridges right next\nto each other on the three immediately-adjacent parallel paths that\nbifurcate the lake, as can sort of be seen in the lead photo. The middle<\/span> path is surrounded by hedges and is closed to the public; I suspect<\/span> it is\nreserved for the emperor should he visit, which I would<\/span> suppose might\nhappen a few<\/span> times each millennium.<\/p>\n\n\n
