A week ago, I posted<\/span> about another portraiture practice\nsession<\/a> with St\u00e9phane Barbery, but then I lost<\/span> my computer to the repair shop<\/a> for\ntwo days. I've gotten it back, but have yet\nto look at the photos of me that he took, beyond the first two photos.<\/p>\n\n

I've not looked beyond the first two photos because I've been busy....\nsuch as with the new\nLightroom plugin<\/a> that I released<\/span> yesterday, and with another\nportraiture\/lighting practice session on Monday with St\u00e9phane... but the main\nimpediment to me looking at the photos has been my Lightroom curiosity with\nthe second shot of the day.<\/p>\n\n

Here's his second shot of the day:<\/p>\n\n

I'm still not comfortable seeing myself, but this has a certain<\/span>\nsomething that I actually<\/span> like, so for some reason I started<\/span> playing with\nit in Lightroom, and was astounded at the range of looks I could<\/span> come up\nwith. (It perhaps helped the creative process that I was<\/span> drinking beer and\neating my favorite chicken, at Kyoto's ever-delicious Uroko restaurant<\/a>, while\nworking on these the day I got<\/span> my computer back.)<\/p>\n\n

I shouldn't have been surprised, because I've known for a long<\/span> time\nthat shooting in raw format<\/a>\ngives you a lot<\/span> of latitude<\/a> during post processing,\nand even five years ago I was<\/span> exploring\nthe wild interpretations<\/a> that Lightroom's controls afford,\na learning<\/span> concept I've repeated numerous times,\nsuch as\n\nhere<\/a>,\nhere<\/a>,\nhere<\/a>,\nhere<\/a>,\nhere<\/a>,\nhere<\/a>,\nhere<\/a>, and\nhere<\/a>;\n\nthese links are also listed, along with their post titles, in the “related posts” box at the end of the article.<\/p>\n\n

Perhaps my surprise was merely because this is the first time to try this with a portrait.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Anyway, some of what we'll see below has artistic merit, I think,<\/span> and some is\njust silly crazy, but the exploring is fun, so let's take a look<\/span> at some of\nwhat I came<\/span> up with. All images<\/span> on the rest of this post are from the same\noriginal image as the one above, with the only difference being the\ntreatment in Lightroom's develop module.<\/p>\n\n

<\/a>\n“Dave Hill” Look<\/span>\n<\/div>\n\n

Dave Hill<\/a> is a\nphotographer<\/span>\/Photoshopper who gained prominence five or six years ago for\npioneering (or, at least, popularizing) a highly<\/span> processed \u00fcber-edgy\nhigh-contrast style. It's clich\u00e9<\/span> now, but still works for some subjects (of\nwhich I am<\/span> apparently not one).<\/p>\n\n

<\/a>\nTo The Hilt<\/span>\nAll exposure sliders (plus clarity and vibrance) slammed to the hilt\n<\/div>\n\n

Let's take “Moodier” and run that way a bit<\/span> further...<\/p>\n\n\n

I'm a bit hesitant to try B&W in one sense, because I chose<\/span> the\nparticular Uniqlo ¥500\nT-Shirt<\/a> I was<\/span> wearing because I knew<\/span> I would<\/span> post some shots, and knew\nmy mom will like the color on me. But, for the sake of science, we'll forge\nahead....<\/p>\n\n\n

<\/a>\nReally To The Hilt<\/span>\nSame as “To The Hilt”, but with Saturation slammed to zero as well\n<\/div>\n\n\n
<\/a>\nDuochrome<\/span>\ngetting silly (and not just a little creepy) now\n(Anthony said “It's... alien!” and got a bit<\/span> freaked out)<\/span>\n<\/div>\n\n

Having just updated my “Freaky” Lightroom tone-curve\npresets<\/a> for the “Razor Wire in Nagoya<\/a>”\npost the other day, I was tempted<\/span> by the challenge to see whether I could,<\/span>\nin Lightroom alone, replace the blown-out white background with a dead<\/span>\nblack one:<\/p>\n\n

And really, once you start down that slippery slope of silliness, why stop there?\n(It's a rhetorical<\/span> question; don't answer.)<\/span><\/p>\n\n

<\/a>\nCubic?<\/span>\n<\/div>\n\n

It's sort of not fair to show all these versions on the same page,\nbecause your perception gets colored by what you've seen before; it would\nbe more telling to look at each in isolation, if that were possible.\nAnyway, I think<\/span> it's fun to explore (and at times overstep) the boundaries\nof what one can do with a portrait,<\/span> both in artistic concept and in the practical\nsense of what Lightroom's develop controls allow.<\/p>\n\n
