{"id":210,"date":"2006-07-13T21:42:54","date_gmt":"2006-07-13T12:42:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2006-07-13\/210"},"modified":"2006-07-13T21:42:54","modified_gmt":"2006-07-13T12:42:54","slug":"the-mystery-of-jet-lag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2006-07-13\/210","title":{"rendered":"The Mystery of Jet Lag"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\n\nI haven't posted lately because I've been traveling.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nWe arrived in Ohio (for my <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-07-15\/211\">brother Alan's wedding<\/a>, on\nFriday) after <span class='nobr'>a two<\/span>-hour trip to the Kansai International Airport, checking\nin, an 11-hour flight to Chicago, half an hour of taxing on the runway,\nthree-and-a-half hours of immigration\/customs\/layover, another hour and <span class='nobr'>a\nhalf<\/span> to get to Cleveland, then the 45 minutes to the hotel, and then\nanother hour sorting out the room (there was the small matter of <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-07-31\/223\">water dripping from the\nceiling<\/a> in our first room). <span class='nobr'>In all told<\/span>, it was about 24 hours between\nleaving Kyoto (at 2pm Kyoto time) and being able to hit the sack at 1am\nOhio time.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nI was awoken at noon by the rental car guy coming to pick me up to take me\nback to the rental office. <span class='nobr'>I was in<\/span> somewhat of <span class='nobr'>a haze<\/span> for the first few\nminutes, but when <span class='nobr'>I mentioned<\/span> that I'd just flown in from Japan, he was\nvery understanding.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nI got the rental car and drove back to the hotel. Having had 11 hours of\nsleep, once <span class='nobr'>I got<\/span> the morning cobwebs out <span class='nobr'>I felt<\/span> just great, which made it\nall the more surprising that once <span class='nobr'>I got<\/span> back to the hotel, <span class='nobr'>I was suddenly<\/span>\nenveloped in a <b>crushing tiredness<\/b> that consumed me for the rest of\nthe day, drifting in and out of consciousness until <span class='nobr'>I finally<\/span> awoke feeling\nrefreshed at 8:45pm.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nDuring this whole time, Fumie was equally affected, although Anthony (who\nhad been an <i>angel<\/i> on the flight) got up with the noon call and\nplayed, mostly by himself, unless Mommy or Daddy was having <span class='nobr'>a lucid<\/span> moment.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nIn the three or four days (it's hard to keep track) since, our schedules\nhave been all screwed up in seemingly random ways. Yesterday <span class='nobr'>I awoke<\/span> at 7am\nand felt fine, but fell asleep at 8am again until noon. Periods of feeling\nrefreshed are interrupted by extreme tiredness that arrives suddenly and\nquickly. Coffee helps.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nLast night we all got to bed at about midnight, and so <span class='nobr'>I expected<\/span> Anthony\nto sleep late into the morning, but he was up at 6am. <span class='nobr'>I fully<\/span> expect that\nhe'll go back to bed for another 5 or 6 hours, at least, but it's now\nalmost 9am and he's going strong. Fumie and <span class='nobr'>I can't<\/span> quite say the same for\nourselves.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nI wish I could understand this, but I've been trying for 20+ years and am\nno closer today than the day <span class='nobr'>I started.<\/span> <span class='nobr'>I only hope<\/span> that we're awake\ntomorrow at 3pm!\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nIf I ever find time, I'll write about our hotel, <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.sheratonakron.com\/\">Sheraton Suites<\/a> in Cuyahoga Falls,\nOhio (overlooking the aforementioned waterfall). <span class='nobr'>It's got a<\/span> wondeful look\nfrom the outside, the lobby is absolutely gorgeous, and the rooms are\nslimy, dilapidated, and just gross &mdash; and $150-$250 per night!\n[<b>Update:<\/b> <a href=\"\/blog\/2006-07-31\/223\"><span class='nobr'>I found<\/span> the time<\/a>]\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> I haven't posted lately because I've been traveling. <\/p><p> We arrived in Ohio (for my brother Alan's wedding, on Friday) after a two-hour trip to the Kansai International Airport, checking in, an 11-hour flight to Chicago, half an hour of taxing on the runway, three-and-a-half hours of immigration\/customs\/layover, another hour and a half to get to Cleveland, then the 45 minutes to the hotel, and then another hour sorting out the room (there was the small matter of water dripping from the ceiling in our first room).
