{"id":21,"date":"2005-04-19T13:05:39","date_gmt":"2005-04-19T04:05:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2005-04-19\/21"},"modified":"2005-04-23T21:32:36","modified_gmt":"2005-04-23T12:32:36","slug":"i-really-dont-care-to-fly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2005-04-19\/21","title":{"rendered":"I Really Don&#8217;t Care to Fly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I really don't care for flying. <span class='nobr'>It's not that<\/span> I'm scared of it, or\nanything like that -- it's just that I'm sick of it. <span class='nobr'>I used to<\/span> fly a\n<i>lot<\/i> when <span class='nobr'>I worked<\/span> for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omron.co.jp\/\">Omron<\/a> --\nmostly 9- to 11-hour flights back and forth across the Pacific and the US.\n\n<\/p>\n   \n\n<p>Just on <a href=\"http:\/\/ual.com\/\">United Airlines<\/a>, which <span class='nobr'>I have<\/span>\ntended to use the most, according to their Mileage Plus point record for\nme, my &#8220;Lifetime United flight miles&#8221; is 391,730, which is\nequivalent to more than <b>72<\/b> trans-Pacific flights. <span class='nobr'>And that doesn<\/span>'t\ncount the miles <span class='nobr'>I did<\/span> before <span class='nobr'>I signed<\/span> up for their point program, nor the\nnumerous free flights (<span class='nobr'>I had<\/span> lots of mileage points back in the day), nor\nthe many flights on other carriers (including multiple transpacific flights\non each of at least ANA, Korean Air, Northwest, and Asiana -- perhaps more\nthat <span class='nobr'>I can't<\/span> remember.)<\/p>\n\n<p>So, as I said, <span class='nobr'>I'm sick of<\/span> it. <span class='nobr'>A short<\/span>-hop flight, such as across the\nUS, doesn't bother me -- it's the 12-hour flights across the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n<p>So, it is with some sense of dread that <span class='nobr'>I soon<\/span> (just after posting this)\nembark on <span class='nobr'>a long<\/span> trip from Kyoto, Japan to my parents' place in Ohio:<\/p>\n\n<table border=\"1\"> <tr><td>Drive to Kansai Intl (KIX)<\/td><td\nalign=\"right\"> 2.0 hours<\/td><\/tr> <tr><td>Check in, waiting, etc.<\/td><td\nalign=\"right\">3.5 hours<\/td><\/tr> <tr><td>Wheels up to wheels down in\nChicago<\/td><td align=\"right\">11.8 hours<\/td><\/tr> <tr><td>Customs,\nImmigration, etc. <\/td><td align=\"right\">2.0 hours<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td>Chicago to Cleveland <\/td><td align=\"right\">1.5 hours<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td>Cleveland to home <\/td><td align=\"right\">1.5 hours<\/td><\/tr>\n<\/table>\n\n<p>All in all, it runs from 1pm Tuesday (Japan time) to about 10pm Tuesday\n(US Eastern) -- just about 22 hours total.<\/p>\n\n<p>What makes this particular trip more interesting is that I'm doing it\nwith <a href=\"http:\/\/pic.regex.info\/anthony\">Anthony<\/a> -- we're traveling\nbuddies. <span class='nobr'>I hope he<\/span> sleeps most of the way there -- the real challenge will\nbe on the way back in July, where we leave in the morning rather than the\nevening -- he'll likely be awake the whole flight.<\/p>\n\n<p>In either case, another challenge is to carry all the stuff. <span class='nobr'>At least<\/span> now, at 2.5 years, he can walk by himself (if he so chooses, of course). <span class='nobr'>So that means<\/span> <span class='nobr'>I can<\/span> use the stroller to carry some of the bags, and strap the\ncar seat (also used in the airplane) to my back.<\/p>\n\n<p>Despite the challenges, <span class='nobr'>I'm actually<\/span> looking forward to it. <span class='nobr'>My opinion<\/span> my well change --- ask me in about 22 hours......<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I really don't care for flying.
