My previous post<\/a>\nshowing some photos from Nagoya Station a couple<\/span> of years ago brought to\nmind that I'd taken the shot above from a train<\/span> while passing through\nNagoya Station some years prior to that, on a shinkansen<\/span> (bullet train)\ntrip to Tokyo to visit a\nfriend<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

I remembered the shot, but I had no idea when it had been, but with\nLightroom's Map module and many years of having geoencoded my\nphotos<\/a>, I could<\/span> easily find the one other shot in my library that had\nbeen taken at Nagoya Station, and so here we are. (Prior to Lr4, I would<\/span> have used my Proximity\nSearch plugin<\/a> to find the shot, but that's now superfluous with Lr4.)<\/p>\n\n

With both the barbed wire at the bottom and the saw-tooth wire up\ntop, it was clear they didn't want folks running across the tracks.<\/p>\n\n

Having taken this shot with a Nikon D200 almost five years ago, I thought<\/span> its sharpening could use\nsome masking, to lower the noise. While sliding the “Masking” slider in Lightroom, if you hold\ndown the Option\/Alt key, it shows you where the mask is, and in this case, it made for an interesting result\ndue to the edge-detection algorithm used for the mask.\nHere's a screenshot<\/span> of how it looked in Lightroom (with the “Masking” slider marked in red).:<\/p>\n\n

This reminded me of a post two and a half<\/span> years ago, “Gettin\u2019 Freaky\nWith Lightroom Tone-Curve Presets<\/a>”, which totally pushed the\nenvelope on the new tone-mapping features introduced in Lightroom 3<\/span><\/span>, creating exceedingly wild results with\ntotally unrealistic tone-map presets. If you don<\/span>'t recall that\nuser-interactive article, pop over there<\/a> check it out:\nit's perhaps not all that practical, but it's fun.<\/p>\n\n

So, I thought<\/span> I'd try some of the funky tone-curve presets presented on\nthat post on this image, and was rudely reminded that they didn't work in\nPV2012, the new Process Version (i.e. develop render engine) default in\nLr4. So, I built<\/span> a copy<\/span> of all the presets that works with PV2012, and\nadded the to that page.<\/p>\n\n

Then I returned to this photo and tried a few<\/span> of the presets, but\ncouldn't get anything cool like the edge-detection mask...<\/p>\n\n\n

So, that was disappointing, but at least it prompted me to update the presets for modern Lightroom processing.<\/p>\n\n

Here's another photo from that trip on the shinkansen (bullet train)\nfive years ago, taken while we happened to be running in parallel with a\nlocal<\/span> train on the approach to Tokyo Station:<\/p>\n\n
