As I've mentioned recently, I'm trying<\/span> to get\nmore skillful with formal portraiture, and to that end yesterday I had<\/span>\nanother practice session with fellow Kyoto resident St\u00e9phane Barbery.<\/p>\n\n

We had a ton of new lighting equipment but very little experience on how\nto use it, so our main goal was to just try all kinds of lighting setups to\nsee what worked and what didn't work. I'll write more on that later.<\/p>\n\n

We also tried to see what worked on the human level... there's so much\nmore behind a good<\/span> result than technical skill... you have to have\/create a\ncertain<\/span> connection between the one shooting and the one being shot. We've\nknown each other for years, but it's a very<\/span> different thing to put a camera<\/span>\nin between, so in one sense we were starting from scratch.<\/p>\n\n

But there's clear progress from the first time we did this, back in\nJune. To revisit<\/span> that shoot, here's the lead photo from “Trying a Little<\/span>\nFormal Portraiture, Round 1<\/span>: St\u00e9phane Barbery Shoots Me<\/a>”:<\/p>\n\n

Maybe it helps that this time I have<\/span> a shave<\/span>\nand a shirt<\/span> with a collar<\/span> (a ¥790 collared version of the Uniqlo Dry T<\/a>), but I think<\/span>\nit also represents progress in lighting, in St\u00e9phane's skill behind the camera,\nand in my comfort in front of it. Maybe my max clich\u00e9<\/a>\nphoto shoot helped in that regard.<\/p>\n\n

As of this morning, the computer that I do<\/span> all my photo stuff on is\ncurrently in the shop for\nrepairs<\/a> so I don't<\/span> have access to the photos, which is one reason I'm\nposting St\u00e9phane's copies. Another reason is to continue progress in\nlearning to let go of my self-image hangups by showing someone else's\nphotographic post-processing, especially someone else who artistic sense\nsometimes differs from\nmine.<\/a><\/p>\n\n

Something about it is downright creepy to me, as if the caption should be\n“Your children were absolutely delicious!<\/i>”, but it's one of a small<\/span> group he\npicked as the best of the whole day, so I dunno.<\/span> What do you think?<\/p>\n\n
