{"id":209,"date":"2006-07-04T00:48:30","date_gmt":"2006-07-03T15:48:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2006-07-04\/209"},"modified":"2006-07-04T00:48:30","modified_gmt":"2006-07-03T15:48:30","slug":"bought-a-new-macbook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2006-07-04\/209","title":{"rendered":"Bought a New MacBook"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\n\nI like the little Apple iBook <span class='nobr'>I bought<\/span> in 2002 (just before Anthony was\nborn), but the iBooks have <span class='nobr'>a design<\/span> flaw that causes <span class='nobr'>a wire<\/span> leading to the\nscreen's backlight to become frayed and fail. <span class='nobr'>It manifests<\/span> itself with a\n&#8220;flaky&#8221; backlight that flickers when the screen angle is adjusted, getting\nworse and over the course of days or weeks until the screen just won't come\non anymore.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nIt's a <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/search.yahoo.com\/search?p=ibook++backlight+broken&amp;y=Search+the+Web&amp;ei=UTF-8&amp;fr=FP-tab-web-t400&amp;x=wrt\">common\nproblem<\/a>.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nMy iBook had this problem while it was still under the extended warranty\nI'd bought, and was fixed, but then started acting up again <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> months\nago. <span class='nobr'>I was busy<\/span> working on <span class='nobr'>a project<\/span> (that <span class='nobr'>I finished<\/span> today -- more about\nthat later) so <span class='nobr'>I didn't<\/span> want to deal with it, so <span class='nobr'>I literally<\/span> left the iBook\non my desk and never closed the lid or even adjusted the screen. <span class='nobr'>I used it<\/span>\nevery day, but as if it were <span class='nobr'>a desktop<\/span> computer, not <span class='nobr'>a laptop.<\/span>\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nNeeding a working laptop for my trip to The States (we're leaving in <span class='nobr'>a\nweek<\/span>; my brother Alan is getting married on the 14th), <span class='nobr'>I decided<\/span> to bite\nthe bullet and get <span class='nobr'>a new<\/span> system. <span class='nobr'>I hope Apple<\/span>'s learned how to make <span class='nobr'>a hinge<\/span>\nproperly, because <span class='nobr'>I bought<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a new<\/span> <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/macbook\/\">MacBook<\/a> (one of the new Macs with\nan Intel processor; <span class='nobr'>I can<\/span> even run Windows on it, but, well, that'd be like\ncovering <span class='nobr'>a slice<\/span> of tasty pie with poop, so <span class='nobr'>I won't<\/span> be doing that.)\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nI got the &#8220;13.3\" white 2.0GHz 80 gig-drive&#8221; version with no\nextra memory, and bought two gigabytes of memory from <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/item\/Other%20World%20Computing\/53DR2SPAIR2G\/\">Other\nWorld Computing<\/a> (which arrived from America in an <i>amazing<\/i> three\ndays). <span class='nobr'>I would<\/span> have liked the black version, but that color choice costs\n$150 more, so <span class='nobr'>I opted<\/span> for the standard white.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nI copied my home directory over from the iBook yesterday, and then for the\nfirst time in months, actually shut the iBook cover. Talk about good timing\n... that was it for the iBook! <span class='nobr'>The backlight<\/span> doesn't come on anymore.
