I've been wanting to post this for the last three months, and was\nfinally prompted to do so today. This past spring, Fumie's mom celebrated\nher kanreki<\/i>, her sixtieth birthday. It's a big<\/span> deal in Japanese\nculture (much more so than, say, 50 or 70), a cultural<\/span> milestone not quite\non the level of wedding, but up there.<\/p>\n\n

We had a ritzy lunch at\nBeaux Sejours<\/a>,\nthe French restaurant at the\nGrand Prince Hotel Kyoto<\/a>\n(which I've always known as the Takaragaike Prince Hotel, so they must have changed\ntheir name somewhere along the way).<\/p>\n\n

We asked the waiter to snap a photo with my camera. He had clearly<\/span> never\ntouched such a big<\/span> camera before (I had<\/span> the D700 + vertical grip, with the\n24-70mm f\/2.8 zoom), but he took a great<\/span> shot...<\/p>\n\n

Knowing I would want to post about it, I tried<\/span> to remember to snap shots of the food, but I think<\/span> I forgot<\/span> a course<\/span> or three...<\/p>\n\n

We don't eat at such ritzy\/pricey places often, but did again this\nevening to celebrate Anthony getting the pins taken out of his broken\nfinger, the last major step to returning to normal. We had the<\/span> dinner\nbuffet at the Westin\nMiyako's AquaBlue Cafe<\/a>. Anthony picked it because he wanted a buffet<\/span> of\nsome sort, and it turns out that they had a great<\/span> selection for kids,\nincluding all kinds of candies and other junkie stuff that's as delightful\nfor the kid as it is bad for them, but it was a special<\/span> celebration so we\nlet him pig out.<\/p>\n\n

But frankly, I have never<\/span> liked the pretentious arrogance that seems to\npervade every nuance of hotel restaurants, and this experience reminded me\nwhy. The price<\/span> is advertised as ¥5,000 per person, high by any standard\nbut not as ridiculous as the translated US$63 price sounds, but they sneak\nin a 10<\/span>% “service charge” on top of that, and drinks are not included. I\npaid<\/span> ¥670 for a Coke<\/span>-Cola, which after the 10% bonus translates to\n$9.30. They brought a normal<\/span> can, just like you'd get from a vending<\/span>\nmachine for ¥100. $9.30 for one can of Coke. At least<\/span> it was an\n“Official Sponsor of the London 2012 Olympics” can. Sigh.<\/p>\n\n

But like I said, the food was good and we all had a good<\/span> time, and most\nimportantly, the weight of a month's<\/span> worry about how painful the\npin-extraction procedure would be has been lifted.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
