The other day I posted “This Evening's Sunset in Kyoto<\/a>”, a photo<\/span> that I really<\/span> like\nof yet another not-too-bad Kyoto sunset, taken from the Shogunzuka overlook\n(\u5c06\u8ecd\u585a)<\/span> that I often<\/span> visit in hopes of a nice<\/span> sunset.<\/p>\n\n

As the proximity-search\n“nearby photos” link<\/a> under that photo (and those below) shows, I post lots<\/span> of shots\ntaken from up there, most recently “A Typhoon<\/span> Makes\nfor a Good<\/span> Sunset (But It\u2019s Me That Makes It Great)<\/a>” a month<\/span> and a half<\/span>\nago, and a week<\/span> before that, “Bland Sunset Over Kyoto: They\nCan\u2019t All Be Amazing<\/a>”.<\/p>\n\n

I've been up a dozen times since then, with little or nothing much to\nshow for it until the day before yesterday's sunset, which was certainly\nnice, but sadly it wasn't on par with the greatest sunset I'd ever\nseen<\/a>, but nice is still nice, so I'm happy.<\/p>\n\n

Usually I have hope<\/i> but little expectation<\/i>, but yesterday's late-afternoon sky was encouraging...<\/p>\n\n

The important points here in my theory is that the cloud cover is high,\nand breaks up toward the western horizon. For a burning<\/span> sky you want solid\ncloud cover to be lit from below<\/i>, which can happen just at\/after\nsunset if the far western horizon is clear. An hour before<\/span> sunset looked\npromising, so I drove<\/span> up, and half an hour before sunset I took<\/span> the shot\nabove, and it still looked promising.<\/p>\n\n

The guy with the powerful binoculars is a fixture<\/span> up there, and\napparently quite the conversationalist. As people<\/span> come and go, he's always\nengaging folks in conversation in such a way<\/span> that few people leave\nquickly... without exception they genuinely seem to enjoy his conversation\nand the things he points out with his binoculars. I've seen him dozens of\ntimes, and made my greetings when we're the only two there, but even when\nwe're the only two there, he's never spoken a word<\/span> to me. Odd.<\/p>\n\n

A friend told me yesterday that he didn't care for this photo, and I\ninstinctively<\/span> felt that it's likely for exactly the same\ncan't-put-your-finger-on-it reason that I really<\/span> like it. It's got a<\/span>\ncertain too-good-to-be-true travel-brochure look that in this case appeals\nto me, but I can<\/span> understand some folks being somehow turned off by it.<\/p>\n\n
