I'm mixing things up today by dipping into the large backlog of stuff I\nwant<\/span> to post, to my trip last December to the Jingoji Temple<\/a> in\nnorth-west Kyoto.<\/p>\n\n

This location is actually only about a mile<\/span> away from the Kuuya-taki Waterfall<\/a>\nthat I've been posting\nabout<\/a> recently, but it's a very<\/span> mountainous mile and the two locations\nfeel worlds apart. To drive<\/span> between them, for example, would take a\nconsiderable<\/span> time because it entails a long<\/span> loop into the city and\nback.<\/p>\n\n

I'd made a few introductory posts from that trip, including\n“On The Path To (and From) Northwest Kyoto's Jingoji Temple<\/a>”,\nand one of the temple buildings appeared as\n“Inspired Artistic Temple Shot By Paul Barr<\/a>”\nand its neighbor in the temple complex provided for\n“Simple Temple Sliding Wall<\/a>”, but otherwise I've not tapped into\nthe beauty of the place.<\/p>\n\n

But I won't do much in this post, either; all the photos on this post were from a short<\/span> path in the mountain behind the temple complex.<\/p>\n\n

It alternated between gloomy and brilliant sun, with the mostly-cloudy\nsky yielding generally gorgeous<\/i> light, such as in the lead shot\n(which is almost straight out of the camera). Later in the day we got some\nphotogenic rain<\/a>,\na big rainbow<\/a>,\nand not too bad of a sunset<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

A change of lens and a big change in the exposure yields quite different results:<\/p>\n\n\n

I'm feeling less and less confident with my technical ability to set a\nreasonable<\/span> white balance. I take a<\/span> lot of white-balance readings like in\nthe photo above, and often when I use<\/span> them to set the color balance in\nLightroom, the image just snaps into place, but it seems equally often that\nthe color gets pushed wildly, often towards what feels unnaturally\n“overcolored”. I had to<\/span> manually pull back on most of these because the\n“correct” color was just off-the-charts orange.<\/p>\n\n

I don't mind making an adjustment to suit to taste, but I'd like to have\nas a base<\/span> the technical ability to set the “correct” color, then stray from\nthere if I feel<\/span> like it, but sometimes I take<\/span> all the steps that should\nproduce the “correct” color and it looks horribly unrealistic.
