Picking up the story of last month's visit to\nthe Kuuya-taki Waterfall<\/a> in western Kyoto, where the story\nstarted with “Discovery On The Way to The Waterfall<\/a>”\nand, after intermediate posts\nabout bugs<\/a> and\nbark<\/a>,\nwas most recently addressed in\n“Finally Reaching the Kuuya-taki Waterfall<\/a>”.<\/p>\n\n

At one point in the approach to the waterfall you pass under the stone shrine gate\nseen earlier<\/a>, and from there off to one side\nare the ruins of an old stone staircase<\/a>\nbeing reclaimed by the mountain. We decided<\/span> to see where it went.<\/p>\n\n

The staircase is very steep, and barely there. The first<\/span> third or so ascends one direction at an angle up the mountain,\nthen it bends to go straight up for the rest. The photo<\/span> above is at the bend, looking back.<\/p>\n\n\n

At some point on the way up the side of the mountain becomes reinforced\nby a traditional<\/span> Japanese stone wall, suggesting something substantial at\nthe top....<\/p>\n\n

Looking beyond the edge to the steep face and its current tangle of vines gives a good<\/span> feeling of the vibe of the place...<\/p>\n\n

When we got to the top, we discovered...... nothing. It was an<\/span> area that\nappears to have been abandoned for decades, mostly devoid of man-made\nobjects, but strewn with overgrown rubble of old tiles and stones, as if\nthey had been discarded here long ago.<\/p>\n\n

Most fragments were nondescript, but the broken tile above was one of\ntwo bigger ones that had some character.<\/p>\n\n

It had two inscriptions on the sides...<\/p>\n\n

As best I can tell this says\n\n\u300c\u5927\u4e59\u4e94\u5e74\u516b\u6708\u4e4b\u65b0\u8abf\u300d<\/span>\nor maybe\n\u300c\u4e03\u4e59\u4e94\u5e74\u516b\u6708\u4e4b\u65b0\u8abf\u300d<\/span>,\nwhich means “newly made in August of the fifth year of ______”,<\/span> but I can't<\/span> tell what\nthe era is. Anyone have any ideas?<\/p>\n\n

Update:<\/span> According to this helpful\ncomment<\/a> left below, the date is 1916, and the inscription on the following photo includes the name of the artisan who created the title.<\/p>\n\n

On the other side we find an inscription that I have<\/span> no clue how to read or what it means...<\/p>\n\n
