As I mentioned yesterday in “Discovery On The Way to The\nWaterfall<\/a>”, Kyoto biologist Nicolas Joannin<\/a> sort of likes bugs, so I find<\/span>\nmyself snapping pictures of the little devils when I'm out with him.<\/p>\n\n

We were at the Gioji Temple (as I've been posting about, starting with\n“Tag Along With\nMe on a Photo<\/span> Shoot at Kyoto\u2019s Gioji Temple<\/a>”), and when we weren't\ntaking pictures of the temple's ample moss and ferns<\/a> or little\nmicroscopic mushrooms (white<\/a> or orange<\/a>, take your pick),\nwe didn't have to look far to find a bug.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Sometimes we ran into them, literally, or almost<\/i> ran into them.\nThis next little guy, the size of a grain<\/span> of rice, was hanging from an invisible\nthread at Nicolas's forehead level, and I noticed<\/span> and was able to alert\nNicolas about an inch from impact....<\/p>\n\n

Full on 125mm 1:1<\/b> macro handheld at f\/2.5 of a bug<\/span> whipping\naround in the breeze is not going to turn out well, and indeed you can't\nreally identify the green smudge in the picture above. Nicolas did better\nwhen he was simply trying to shoot me shooting the bug...<\/p>\n\n

This guy's web was really interesting with the white spiral pattern, but\nwow did it undulate at a high<\/span> frequency in the wind (sometimes aided by a\npuff<\/span> from a chuckling<\/span> Nicolas).<\/p>\n\n

Later we came across this punk-rock caterpillar:<\/p>\n\n

Then there was this guy just about to start a meal.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

I noticed a black butterfly\/moth thing on a nearby<\/span> tree, but it moved\nto the other side of the tree before I could<\/span> get it. But Nicolas<\/span> followed,\nand got this nice shot:<\/p>\n\n

We then moved from the Gioji Temple and headed into the mountains, stopping by\na place<\/span> of some historical significance that I'll explain later. While there, we came\nacross this hairy guy:<\/p>\n\n

The shape reminds me, oddly enough, of Tom\nSelleck's mustache<\/a>, but also in some ways of the “angel\nwing” countermeasure flares<\/a> that military airplanes use in\ndefense. The latter<\/span> probably makes more sense, since as far as I can<\/span> tell\nthis is the caboose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom was on a rusty fence blocking this path up a very<\/span> steep incline):<\/p>\n\n

This was where the Mt. Atago railway used to run, similar, I suppose,<\/span> to\nthe train (“cable car” in Japanese) seen last month in “Returning From the Mt. Hiei\nHike: Taking The Easy Way Out<\/a>”. It ran from<\/span> 1927 until the Japanese\nmilitary confiscated it for its iron in 1944. You can see<\/span> some old pictures\nof what it looked like here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n
