I mentioned the other day in a post about a minor<\/span> heart\nepisode<\/a> that a local<\/span> restaurant, Togiya<\/a>, serves Prucia<\/b><\/a>, a plum<\/span> wine\n(umeshu<\/i> — \u6885\u9152)<\/span> from France. I'd never<\/span> seen a plum<\/span> wine from outside\nJapan.<\/p>\n\n

Well, in the store the other day to pick up some of the\nfiesta-in-a-bottle Sangria Pe\u00f1asol<\/b> that I mentioned<\/span> in last month's\n“A Bunch<\/span>\nOf Blurry Pictures of Folks Pouring Wine<\/a>”, to my surprise I came<\/span> across\na bottle<\/span> of Prucia<\/b> on the shelf. In the name<\/span> of research and public\nservice, I brought<\/span> it home with me.<\/p>\n\n

I've shown great restraint in letting it sit in the fridge, wanting to\nphotograph the interesting bottle before actually partaking of its quirky\nliquid goodness. I finally<\/span> got around to having it sit for a portrait<\/span> for\nme, and in doing so had much better luck with the lighting than I did<\/span> in yesterday's portraiture\npractice<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Make no mistake, I still<\/span> have almost no clue what I'm doing, but bottles\nare a lot<\/span> easier than people, and when you can immediately check the\nresults on the back of the camera and make adjustments, just a bit<\/span> of\nknowledge about light can go a very<\/span> long way in guiding your experiments.<\/p>\n\n

I read the most-excellent book “Light — Science and\nMagic<\/i><\/a>” many years ago, and quite a bit<\/span> has stuck with me. I've got\nit here on the shelf.. a re<\/span>-read would certainly be time well spent.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, here's the setup for the “white” shot above:<\/p>\n\n

It's really quite simple... three craft-store white foam boards sitting\non my kitchen table, and a flash<\/span> directly off to the side (next to a bottle<\/span>\nof a different<\/span> kind of plum wine that we'll see later in this post).<\/p>\n\n

The on-camera flash is up, but it was acting only as the commander for the on-table flash,\nand did not add to the photograph's lighting.<\/p>\n\n
