Last week I did what I suppose is my first purposeful portraiture photo\nshoot. I've done plenty of impromptu portraits (such as these<\/a> or these<\/a>), and I've found\nthe use of the word “impromptu” frees me from the worry of having to be\ngood: it's impromptu, so hey, if I come<\/span> away with something nice that nice,\nbut it's not expected.<\/p>\n\n

This time was different, meeting with the express intent to capture some\nfather\/son photos. But the subject<\/span> matter, a friend<\/span> Tetsuo and his younger\nchild, Issei (\u4e00\u661f),<\/span> made it difficult to get a bad<\/span> picture. A general<\/span> rule\nthat seems to make sense to me is that when doing family stuff, so long as\nthe kids are in a good<\/span> mood, the camera can do no wrong. Issei was in a good<\/span> mood.<\/p>\n\n

How I met him is sort of an interesting story. Last year on day three<\/a> of Kyoto's Gion\nFestival, I mentioned<\/span>\n\nthe “exceedingly pleasant” experience<\/a> I had<\/span> when I stopped<\/span> at a Spanish<\/span> restaurant's stall\nselling ham and beer. It took six<\/span> months, but I finally<\/span> got to go and actually\nvisit the restaurant last December, and had a nice<\/span> chat with one of the cooks, who prepared my food\nright in front of me at the bar. It was Tetsuo<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n

After chatting a while and enjoying his personable nature, we were both\nsurprised to discover that not only did our kids go to the same weekend\nEnglish-study group, but that I had<\/span> photographed his wife and younger kid\nat the group's Christmas party earlier that day. I showed<\/span> him the photos on\nthe back of my camera, which I still<\/span> had with me. What a small<\/span> world.<\/p>\n\n

When looking at the picture of his boy (who must have been six months\nold at the time) and him, I could<\/span> see the clear resemblance, and had been\nwanting to photograph them together ever since. I finally<\/span> got my chance\nlast week.<\/p>\n\n
