Fumie's Dad was in town (from <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-04-03\/173\">Malaysia<\/a>, where he's\nstationed for work), so today was the day.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nWe went to the store, and Anthony picked out his present. <span class='nobr'>He had a<\/span> choice\nof silver, yellow, and red, and had not <span class='nobr'>a moment's<\/span> hesitation when picking\nred.\n\n<\/p>\n\n<div style='padding-top: 10px; padding-bottom: 40px' class='img_center'><a href=\"\/i\/_JEF015413.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/_JEF015413_sm.jpg\" width=\"410\" height=\"607\"\nborder=\"0\"\nclass=\"raw\"\nid=\"iJEF015413\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n\n<p>We went to a park near the house, and gave it <span class='nobr'>a try.<\/span> <span class='nobr'>The seat came<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a bit<\/span>\ntoo low. <span class='nobr'>It was much<\/span> easier for him once it was raised <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> inches.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"padding-top: 10px; padding-bottom: 40px\" class='img_center'><a href=\"\/i\/_JEF015512.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/_JEF015512_sm.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"490\"\nborder=\"0\"\nclass=\"raw\"\nid=\"iJEF015512\"\nphotostream=\"anthony\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n\n<p>Off we go!<\/p>\n\n<div class='img_center'><a href=\"\/i\/_JEF015538.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/_JEF015538_sm.jpg\" width=\"430\" height=\"638\"\nborder=\"0\"\nclass=\"raw\"\nid=\"iJEF015538\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n\n<p style='padding-top: 40px'> The little park we were at had an oval\nwalkway around it, as you can sort of see in the center of this <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;q=35.014594,135.782025&amp;t=k&amp;ll=35.014594,135.782025&amp;spn=0.002245,0.005386&amp;om=1\">satellite\nphoto<\/a> if you zoom up (if you switch to the &#8220;map view&#8221;, it's more clear,\nbut smaller).\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nAnthony went around the oval -- <span class='nobr'>a distance<\/span> of about 200 meters (220 yards). <span class='nobr'>It was slow<\/span> going, as he wasn't used to it, and there were slight slopes to\ncontend with. <span class='nobr'>It took over<\/span> 6 and <span class='nobr'>a half<\/span> minutes to make that first\n200-meter circuit. Of course, Fumie or <span class='nobr'>I followed<\/span> along with him the whole\nway (the whole time he was on the bicycle, actually).\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nThen he went again. <span class='nobr'>And then again<\/span>, and again and again, with one of us in\ntow.... <b>18 times<\/b>, for <span class='nobr'>a total<\/span> of 3.6 kilometers (2.25 miles)!! <span class='nobr'>And then there<\/span> was the third-of-a-mile ride home -- he\/we really got <span class='nobr'>a workout.<\/span>\n\n<\/p>\n<table style='padding-top: 10px' class='ic'><tr><td><a href=\"\/i\/_JEF015560.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/_JEF015560_sm.jpg\" width=\"430\" height=\"635\"\nborder=\"0\"\nclass=\"raw\"\nid=\"iJEF015560\"\/><\/a><\/td><td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/tracklog-bike.gif\" width=\"249\" height=\"635\"\nalt=\"tracklog from my GPS unit of Anthony's first bike ride\"\nclass=\"raw\"\nid=\"itracklog_bike\"\ntitle=\"tracklog from my GPS unit of Anthony's first bike ride\"\/><\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n\n<p>\n\nHe'd also gotten better at riding, because by the time he was toward his\n18th cycle around the park, he'd cut the time down to 100 seconds (for an\naverage speed of 4.5 mph -- that's <span class='nobr'>a trot<\/span> for daddy!).\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nBy the way, <span class='nobr'>I know all<\/span> these statistics because I'd left my <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-03-25\/165\">GPS unit<\/a> in the bike's\nbasket, and it recorded <span class='nobr'>a tracklog<\/span> of the whole thing. (That's the map view of it\nthere in yellow).\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nI used the GPS data to geoencode all the photos here, which you can see if\nyou view their <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/other-writings\/online-exif-image-data-viewer\/\">Exif\ndata<\/a>.\n\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top:20px\">\n\nIn the end, he was tuckered out, but was still able to ride home and park\nhis bike in his own spot, which, of course, made him feel quite proud.
