The other day in “On The Way To Lunch: Eastern-Kyoto Stroll<\/a>” I ended<\/span> with a\nfew<\/span> shots of the girls above taking advantage of a photogenic<\/span> location, made more so\nfor everyone else by their presence.<\/p>\n\n

I was heading to the Kiyomizu branch of the most excellent Junsei Tofu Restaurant<\/a> to\nhave lunch with Paul Barr. The branch<\/span> is so named because it's near the\nfront gate of the Kiyomizu\nTemple<\/a>, in an area that usually packed with tourists, so the quiet\nelegance of the restaurant is a welcome<\/span> relief from the crowds. I learned<\/span> of it from a friend<\/span> who occasionally helps out with running the place.<\/p>\n\n

The place is known for its tofu, always made that day, but having been\nthere a couple<\/span> of times in the last month, I've decided that I prefer<\/span> the\nopportunity for extremely fresh yuba<\/i><\/a> (\u6e6f\u8449)<\/span>\n— “tofu skin” — which literally develops before your eyes on a\nheated<\/span> dish of soy milk.<\/p>\n\n

Once the “skin” forms, you lift it with a bamboo<\/span> stick...<\/p>\n\n

Tofu generally doesn't have much taste on its own, but can take on a\nwonderful<\/span> range of tastes when artfully prepared. Yuba, on the other hand,\ndoes have its own very yummy taste.<\/p>\n\n

The set yuba<\/i> lunch comes with a lot<\/span> of stuff besides the\nyuba<\/i> itself, and at ¥2,150 is a great<\/span> value. The entrance<\/span> to the\nrestaurant is here<\/a> (but note that\nthe building is too new to be shown on the satellite view.).<\/p>\n\n
