I like heading off on my scooter into the mountains of Japan to explore\nand take pictures, but am often out of cell range, so the map on my iPhone\ncan't update. I like the<\/span> idea of having maps with me, and until someone can\ninvent a way<\/span> to make a map<\/span> on paper or some other high-tech solution, I'm happy<\/span> to have recently discovered the Galileo Offline Maps<\/strike> (Name changed Feb 2019 to Guru Maps<\/a>) iOS app.<\/p>\n\n

After installing the free base app and purchasing the $1.99 “import maps\nfrom PC” feature, I could<\/span> import maps made on my laptop by\nfollowing these instructions<\/a>. I made maps<\/span> for large areas of Kyoto\nusing both Google and Yahoo! Japan Maps (and was surprised to find out that\nsomewhere along the lines the Yahoo! Japan maps have become superior).<\/p>\n\n

The resulting 2GB database files are then copied to the app, and voila, I have wonderfully<\/span>-interactive no-WiFi-required maps of the area. I love it<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n

I also spent a whopping $1.99 extra to enable the bookmarking feature.\n$4 for this app is amazing to me.<\/p>\n\n

Sadly, when I bought my iPad a couple of years ago, I didn't<\/span> realize\nthat the WiFi-only models had no GPS antenna, so when I'm out in the\nmountains I have<\/span> to actually read the map and look at my surroundings to\nfigure out where I am.<\/span> I may not<\/span> survive.
