The other day after a\nshort stroll through the Chishaku-in Temple<\/a> in eastern Kyoto, we made our way\nbehind it to search for a set<\/span> of stairs that St\u00e9phane<\/a> had suggested. We found<\/span> it.<\/p>\n\n

At the top of the small set of steps was a park<\/span> with cherry blossoms and kids playing, beyond which was a large<\/span> wooden gate building...<\/p>\n\n

Paying a scant 50 yen (US$ 0.60) to pass through, we found the main set of stairs....<\/p>\n\n

Just as we started up, someone came to jog the stairs, reminding me of\nnorth-east Kyoto's Tanukitanisan Fudouin\nTemple<\/a> where athletes train by running the stair-filled path.<\/p>\n\n

At the top of this very long set of stairs is another little park and little gate...<\/p>\n\n

There's nothing much to speak of at the top... a large<\/span> but\nremarkably-boring grave monument of some kind... so the attraction is the\n523-step trip, not the destination.<\/p>\n\n

Photographically speaking, this post so far has been free from the\nburden of color and quality, but I'd like to inject at least a bit<\/span> of\ncolor (though not quality) via some less-than-thrilling tsubaki<\/i>\nblossoms, if for no other reason than it gives me the opportunity to refer to\nthis utterly-perfect\nblossom<\/a>, a related<\/span> tsubaki<\/i> variety at a temple<\/span> a mile<\/span> or so away.<\/p>\n\n
