No, it's best when it's <span class='nobr'>a friend<\/span> or trusted source,\nwhen the joke is <i>so good<\/i> that <span class='nobr'>I actually<\/span> regret having given them my\ntrust. Yes, the satisfaction you feel when you make me\nregret having trusted you..... well, jokes just don't get better than that,\nnow do they?<\/p>\n\n<p>One of the best ever was back in 1998, when I'd been working for Yahoo!\nfor <span class='nobr'>a year.<\/span> This was near the beginning of Yahoo!'s great heyday and we\nwere putting out new properties left and right...\n<span class='nobr'>Yahoo! Mail,<\/span>&nbsp;\n<span class='nobr'>Yahoo! Atlanta,<\/span>&nbsp;\n<span class='nobr'>Yahoo! Auctions,<\/span>&nbsp;\n<span class='nobr'>Yahoo! This,<\/span>&nbsp;\n<span class='nobr'>Yahoo! That.<\/span>&nbsp; <span class='nobr'>It was common<\/span> for <span class='nobr'>a pre<\/span>-launch\ncompany-wide invitation to check out the <span class='nobr'>a site<\/span> and pass along feedback to\nthe developers, and <span class='nobr'>I often<\/span> spent considerable energy on this, as many of\nus did. <span class='nobr'>So one day<\/span> when <span class='nobr'>a company<\/span>-wide call went out to check out the\nforthcoming &#8220;Yahoo! Jokes&#8221; site, <span class='nobr'>I spent<\/span> several hours combing through its\nmechanics to provide feedback.<\/p>\n\n<p>Of course, you see where this is going: it was April 1st, and the entire\nsite was <span class='nobr'>a joke,<\/span> as was the company-wide call to action. <span class='nobr'>I'm sure they<\/span> got\n<span class='nobr'>a great<\/span> laugh at everyone who wasted hours of their paid workday, and <span class='nobr'>I\nlearned<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a great<\/span> lesson in return: never again to trust the person who sent\nthe request.<\/p>\n\n<p>Perhaps I'm just a sourpuss, but it seems that the whole point of April\nFool's jokes these days is to trick someone into believing you, which put\nanother away, is to make them regret having trusted you. Trust and respect\nshouldn't be so easily discarded.<\/p>\n\n<p>Of course, having fun is fun, so if it's <i>obviously silly<\/i> (<a\nhref='http:\/\/sethgodin.typepad.com\/seths_blog\/2012\/04\/monetization-and-fairness.html'>like\nthis from Seth Godin<\/a>), <span class='nobr'>I'm all for<\/span> it.
