So I was going through the photos from last weekend's Kyoto Marathon<\/a>\n\uff08\u4eac\u90fd\u30de\u30e9\u30bd\u30f3\uff12\uff10\uff11\uff12)<\/span>\nand came across an out-of-focus shot that I'd normally just delete, but it had some kind of odd sense of space about it\nthat I found<\/span> somehow appealing, and wondered whether I couldn't<\/span> use some funky processing to turn the lack of focus into\nan asset.<\/p>\n\n

I don't know whether I succeeded, but the result is what you see above, something that vaguely reminded me of my\nmemory of some Leroy Neiman<\/a> Olympic paintings.<\/p>\n\n

I don't use develop presets very often, but I saved<\/span> the extreme develop settings used in this photo as a new<\/span> preset,\nwhich I named<\/span> “Funky Runners”. While there, I noticed<\/span> the few other presets I had<\/span> accumulated over the years, and gave\nthem a try<\/span> with this photo.<\/p>\n\n

The most recent one was “Creamy Autumn Wow” from\n“Kyoto Fall-Color Preview With Impact: Impressionism in Lightroom<\/a>”, but\nthe result with this subject was less impactful than the name implies:<\/p>\n\n

I also tried the first Lightroom develop preset I ever<\/span> made, one that attempted to match the at-the-time-vogue look of\nDave Hill's work, as seen here<\/a> and here<\/a> (the former from a post<\/span> exactly four years ago today, on\nthe annual Kyoto Higashiyama “Hanatoro” lightup event<\/a> in my\nneighborhood, which is again going on this week, but sadly, I've had no time to visit).<\/p>\n\n

These misses just go to show that not all presets are appropriate for all images (though with the extreme nature of\nthese, you wouldn't be faulted for thinking that they're not appropriate for any<\/i> images, but I like<\/span> their effects\nfrom time to time, in extreme moderation).<\/p>\n\n

One of the “time to time” situations is the photo of mounted archer<\/a> printed and\nframed in my office (as seen in “Dabbling in Some Fine-Art\nPrinting for My Office<\/a>”). The preset<\/span> I used<\/span> for that, named unoriginally as “Funky Archer”, produced this:<\/p>\n\n\n

Again, not interesting.<\/p>\n\n

I know I could get “interesting” (though perhaps not “good”) with something from my tone-curve posts from a couple<\/span> of years ago,\neither\n“Stupid Tone-Curve Tricks: A Half<\/span> Dozen Develop Presets for Lightroom<\/a>”\nor\n“Gettin\u2019 Freaky With Lightroom Tone-Curve Presets<\/a>”.\n\nThere's much fodder in there for craziness, and not much for anything else, so I just<\/span> picked one (“Notch Medium 8”)<\/span>\nand then futzed with various brightness settings to come up with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somewhere in the fun waste of time I spent<\/span> on this last night (a needed<\/span> diversion from plugin-related work, the crush of which has not yet\nsubsided in the two weeks since Lightroom 4<\/span> was\nreleased<\/a>) I apparently<\/span> futzed around with a black<\/span>-and-white version, because I found<\/span> this in my catalog this morning:<\/p>\n\n
