As I mentioned in my previous post, yesterday was the Kyoto Marathon<\/a>\n\uff08\u4eac\u90fd\u30de\u30e9\u30bd\u30f3\uff12\uff10\uff11\uff12).<\/span>\nI thought<\/span> it'd be a fun<\/span> experience\nto photograph, to see what I could<\/span> come up with. The first<\/span> challenge was to pick a location<\/span> along the 42-kilometer course that\nwas both photogenic and accessable. (Huge swaths of the city were shut down to traffic, so I wanted<\/span> something I could<\/span> easily reach by bicycle.)<\/p>\n\n

The course runs for several miles south along the rivers in the east of\nthe city, so guessing that would be fruitful, I set off<\/span> there, only to find\nmile after mile of ugly green fencing destroying the immediate background.<\/p>\n\n

However, I eventually<\/span> came across an area blissfully devoid of ugliness,\nand stopped there to make camp:<\/p>\n\n

My happiness was short-lived, for just a moment<\/span> later the scene-destroyers descended on the area...<\/p>\n\n

I joked with the volunteers that it was odd that the executive\norganizers hadn't consulted me on the course or its setup. They agreed.\n\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n

While I waited to see how the scene would unfold, I busied<\/span> myself with\npractice on pulling focus on a moving<\/span> target. With this lens, it's not easy\nfor me to hit focus on a stationary<\/span> target, and I didn't<\/span> think that it\nwould be fruitful to ask the runners to slow down or stop, so I thought<\/span> it\nbest to work on my technique.<\/p>\n\n

The area to the south was particularly narrow, and the race official in\ncharge of the local area was not happy about it. With 15,000 runners set to\narrive soon, I shared<\/span> his concern. I thought<\/span> that they should at least\nextend the width the foot or so on either side where there were no\nobstacles for the duration, but they didn't ask my opinion.<\/p>\n\n

In one area, though, the volunteers had set up some cones to mark a\nmuddy<\/span> area within the bounds of the wider course, and I thought<\/span> that was\ndownright dangerous because once the pack gets thick, the runners can't see\nahead, so people will have to resort to darting when these cones are\nsuddenly found in their way, and with the unrelenting crush of runners\nbehind them none the wiser, any fall would quickly compound into a major<\/span>\nproblem. So I gingerly<\/span> broached the idea to a volunteer,<\/span> suggesting that it\nwould be best to remove those cones altogether, but if they had to be\nthere, try to make them more visible from a distance.<\/span> She consulted<\/span> with\nothers and they made the second changes I had<\/span> suggested, until the area\nhead official walked by and told them to remove all the cones on that side\nof the path, so trouble was averted.<\/p>\n\n
