Today was the Setsubun<\/a><\/i> festival at\nthe Heian Shrine, so I walked<\/span> over to snap some pictures. I'll post and\nwrite more another day, but today just a few<\/span> photos. (For an introduction\nto the event, see my “Setsubun and Mamemaki: Driving out the Demons<\/a>” post\nfrom four years ago.)<\/p>\n\n

The picture above is from the bonfire event, described in my “Intense Burn:\nShinto Rite at the Heian Shrine<\/a>” post. A line of<\/span> priests was chanting\nas others threw bundles of sticks with wishes written on them (the wishes\nthen going up with the smoke to the heavens, or something like that).<\/p>\n\n

I'm surprised in the photo above how much the background is still out of focus at f\/11. The flames<\/span> were quite angry....<\/p>\n\n

I processed these photos with Lightroom 4<\/span> and its new render engine, and\nI notice<\/span> that the flames retain much more of their true orange color. This\nis wonderful, as it always bothered me how bright, intense colors got washed out toward\nwhite<\/a>, leaving the flames in the intense-burn post<\/a> more\nyellow than orange. I'll have to try processing them in Lr3 as well, to\nconfirm the better result is not all due to a different<\/span> camera or better\nexposure.<\/p>\n\n

Other aspects of the festival included a bunch<\/span> of nasty demons who\nended up getting driven out of the place by bean-throwing\ndignitaries...<\/p>\n\n

... and then bringing in good fortune by more bean throwing, but this time\nas packets one could catch and bring home (as described in my “Setsubun Mamemaki: Throwing\nof the Beans<\/a>” post).<\/p>\n\n

The hyper-made-up world of the geiko (Kyoto's geisha) is not really my\nthing, but I loved<\/span> the smile on the one in the photo above.... she looked\nlike she was having a total<\/span> blast, and that made it all the more fun.<\/p>\n\n

I found myself wanting a pack of beans to bring home for Anthony (and\nmaybe bring home some good fortune for myself), but gave up on the idea\nbecause I didn't<\/span> want to wade too deeply into the crowd with my big lens. But I was<\/span> surprised not once, but three times as folks going by gave me a\npack.<\/span> How wonderful. We had them<\/span> this evening after dinner.<\/p>\n\n
