Picking up from my “Badass Japanese Archery: Now It's The Ladies' Turn<\/a>” post the\nother day, here are some more of the very colorful young ladies<\/a>\nat the shooting platform.<\/p>\n\n

As described in “Total Discipline: Anatomy of a Japanese<\/span> Archer's Shot<\/a>”, each\narcher goes at her own pace, but each group of a dozen<\/span> starts at the same\ntime, so they're fairly in sync at the beginning, which can make for some\ninteresting shots.<\/p>\n\n

You can tell it's the second arrow because she has no spare in her right\nhand. You can also<\/span> tell by the fact that the group is much further out of\nsync, with more than half having already left the platform.<\/p>\n\n

As I mentioned in an\nearlier post<\/a> the crowds were ridiculous, so it was challenging to get a\ngood<\/span> vantage point, and at that, “good” meant that you could see one or two\narchers well. With the crowd, hanging branches, ropes, lamp posts, and\nsuch, no place offered a good<\/span> view of everyone, so it was always a\ncompromise.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

I figured I'd have less clutter in frame if I could<\/span> zoom up more, so I\nswitched<\/span> to the 300mm zoom, and less foreground\/background clutter with a\nthinner<\/span> depth of field, so I kept<\/span> it at f\/2 most of the time. This would allow\nme to get more intimate with the archers, such as\nthis boss-looking dude<\/a> and\nthis tough-looking badass<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

The ladies could have the toughness, but their style of dress offered a softer<\/span> side as well..<\/p>\n\n

There were about 90 groups of women, and I got<\/span> there in time for the\nlast eight or nine, so I had<\/span> just a bit<\/span> of time to try to jockey for\ndifferent vantage points.<\/p>\n\n

Another way to get a wider shot is to composite multiple shots together,\nlike the vertical panorama I opened<\/span> up with, but that's a lot<\/span> of work.<\/p>\n\n

So, about the “Tall Tale<\/b>” caption to the lead photo, as I\nmentioned,<\/span> it's a composition<\/span> made from two separate photos stacked one\nabove the other, but what I failed<\/span> to mention is that the two photos are of\ndifferent people<\/i>, taken five minutes apart.<\/p>\n\n

The top photo provided the bow, the visible body (face and arm), and\nmost of the upper half of the hakama<\/i> attire. The rest came<\/span> from the\nlower photo, kindly provided by a conveniently<\/span>-similar stance by the lady\nseen above in “Anti Zoom”.<\/p>\n\n

Interestingly, sleeve of the bow arm from both ladies appears in the composition:\nthey just happened to align such that one appears to be the inside of the other, and\ndoing that area that way allowed other parts to blend more smoothly. Lucky happenstance.<\/p>\n\n

I also removed a big ugly rope that had been cutting through the\nbackground, and extended the bow string along its natural path.<\/p>\n\n

I did all this because I really liked how the top shot showed the\nmammoth size of the bow, but in it the archer was cut off just below the\nchest, leaving an unbalanced lack of person in the shot. Other shots of the\nsame archer didn't show the bow as well, so I looked<\/span> for a way<\/span> to recover\nbalance to the shot I liked,<\/span> and among the 1,000 photos from the day,\nexactly one showed a clear<\/span> view of one archer standing in the same spot,\nand voila<\/i>, we have this post's opening image.<\/p>\n\n

One more “tall tale<\/b>” aspect is that the bow doesn't actually\nextend below the handle as far as implied by the composition because that\nparticular bow is very uneven, with the portion above the handle\nmuch<\/i> longer than that below. It's still<\/span> absolutely gigantic, but not\nquite<\/i> as much as implied. For reference, see this\notherwise-unremarkable shot of the “upper-photo” archer...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I've got to wonder whether that kind of bow is harder to shoot. I'd think<\/span> that due to the uneven lengths to the curves, the bow string would\nnot snap back perfectly perpendicular (the lower curve would have less\ndistance, so would snap back quicker, I'd think).<\/p>\n\n\n
