In yesterday's “Colorful Ladies'\nWardrobe<\/a>” post we looked at some of the young ladies preparing for\ntheir turn at traditional Japanese archery at the rite-of-passage event\ndescribed in “Total Discipline: Anatomy of\na Japanese<\/span> Archer's Shot<\/a>”. Before and after their turn they were as\nlively as you'd expect a bunch<\/span> of twenty-year-old girls to be, but on the\nshooting platform they were all business, every bit worthy to appear along\nthe likes of the guy seen in “More Badass Japanese\nArchery<\/a>”.<\/p>\n\n

I'd been disappointed early on when I was<\/span> driven out by the ridiculous crowds<\/a>\njust before the ladies started, but after having left for lunch, I decided<\/span> to return toward the end, and found it substantially less crowded. (It was\nstill ridiculously crowded, and I spent<\/span> half the time letting old ladies\nstand on the chair I'd brought), but overall I could<\/span> see quite a bit<\/span>: the last 100\n(of more than 1,000) women, then the instructors, then the “playoffs” for\nthe guys, then for the girls. So note to<\/span> self: next year, drop in at the\nend.<\/p>\n\n

These photos were from the playoff round, so out of more than a thousand<\/span>\nwomen who participated, she was one of about a dozen<\/span> women who had hit the\ntarget during the day. (It seemed to me that many more than that hit the\ntarget, so maybe one had to get a full<\/span>-on bull's eye to progress to the\nplayoffs. I don't<\/span> know.)<\/p>\n\n

She progressed to the next round after this shot, so if any emotion\nleaks out it should be of satisfaction, but it's hard to tell. The lead photo<\/span> in this post is from the following round to determine the winner, but\nas I mentioned<\/span> in an earlier post, I had a<\/span> difficult time following the\nannouncements of who won, so I don't<\/span> know how she did. I do know<\/span> that I'd\ncertainly love to present her with copies of these photos some day.<\/p>\n\n
