My recent coverage of the traditional Japanese Archery event described\nlast week in “Total Discipline: Anatomy of\na Japanese<\/span> Archer\u2019s Shot<\/a>” has so far covered mostly the guys (such as\nwith the previous post, “More Badass Japanese\nArchery<\/a>”), but there were about as many gals as guys.<\/p>\n\n

Most of the time I was at the event was while the guys were shooting, so\nwhen I was<\/span> out and about in the greater temple area, the women were in\npreparation mode. They were plentiful and very, very colorful.<\/p>\n\n

The guy's wardrobe was pretty standard across the 1,000 who\nparticipated, and was elegant in is simplicity. For me, that matched well\nwith the art\/discipline of Japanese archery and Japanese cultural history.\nThe ladies, on the other hand, were decked out in a sometimes<\/span> over-the-top\nway that I expect<\/span> most would not see again in their lifetime, except\nperhaps on their wedding day.<\/p>\n\n

Unlike what's worn on the coming-of-age holiday, the outfits seen today\nare not kimono, but instead are a kind<\/span> of hakama<\/a><\/i> specific to\narchery. Men's traditional formal wear is usually hakama, and they can\nsometimes be quite colorful (especially for children, as seen here<\/a>), but are more\noften fairly subdued in color but rich in detail. You can see<\/span> a bit<\/span> of what\ngoes into it on this\npost<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

The level of gaudiness didn't rise to that seen each year on the Coming-of-Age national\nholiday<\/a> (a holiday<\/span> to celebrate those that have become legal adults\n— reached 20 years old — in the past year), but at times it was\nstill pretty heavy. <\/p>\n\n

As I wrote in the “total discipline<\/a>” post,\nthis event was primarily a rite<\/span>-of-passage occasion for those same young\nadults who had turned 20 in the previous year, but only if they had earned\nthe right by advancing to a high<\/span> enough rank in the\nart\/<\/span>sport\/<\/span>discipline of\nJapanese archery.<\/p>\n\n\n

As I roved around with my lens, it tended to be drawn toward the more\nreserved (less gaudy) looks among the crowd, but this post is a smattering<\/span>\nof all kinds of shots, including some that I just<\/span> like the vibe of.<\/p>\n\n

I would have missed most of these because after being driven out by the ridiculous\ncrowd<\/a> at the shooting range, I would<\/span> have gone home but stuck around\nbecause Kyoto friend Nicolas Joannin (he from my “Rained out at the\nFushimi Castle<\/a>” post) had messaged me that he was on his way.<\/p>\n\n

When he arrived, I waited<\/span> outside the staging area while he checked out the shooting area...<\/p>\n\n

Nicolas had retreated from the scrum at the shooting range and joined me\nin the staging area, and had been taking a photo<\/span> of the girl practicing her\nmotions when she noticed him and added a big<\/span> smile. You can see<\/span> the shot he\ngot here<\/a>, along with his others from the day. He got some<\/span> very\nnice results. (He also got a picture<\/span> of me.)<\/p>\n\n

I can't say that some of the heavier makeup and accessories were always\nmy cup of tea, especially when so many are gathered at once, but it was\ncertainly photogenic, and I enjoyed<\/span> the experience.<\/p>\n\n

Next, we'll see these same ladies switch to serious mode, shooting a\nlethal<\/span> weapon on the firing range. And when I<\/span> say “lethal”, I'm not kidding<\/span>. I saw one<\/span> of these arrows pierce all the way through 3\" of hard\nbamboo at 60 meters.<\/p>\n\n
