Continuing with the rite-of-passage Japanese-archery event<\/a>\nI've been posting about (\u7b2c62\u56de \u4e09\u5341\u4e09\u9593\u5802\u5927\u7684\u5168\u56fd\u5927\u4f1a)\n<\/span>, after being driven out by the oppressive\ncrowds<\/a> at the shooting range, I spent<\/span> some time with the\nmore-manageable crowds in the greater temple compound.<\/p>\n\n\n

I took the three shots above before having ventured into the scrum at\nthe shooting range, but after coming out I broke<\/span> out the Nikkor 300mm f\/2<\/span>\nlens for some experimentation. (With its<\/a> all-manual 7kg\nultra<\/i>-thin depth-of-field, any use on my part is “experimentation”.)<\/p>\n\n

The entire eastern side of the temple property is a 500<\/span>-foot-long\ncovered-and-columned walkway in brilliant vermilion, so it offered great\nphotogenic opportunities, though there was some challenge in having to zoom\nwith my feet with the heavy lens and all my stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n

Considering the rich depth of the scene (and the thin depth of the\nlens), these kind of shots were the obvious low-hanging fruit to try, but\nit's hard enough for me to focus this lens on a stationary<\/span> subject, so it\nwas all the more demanding when someone walked directly toward the camera.<\/p>\n\n

I didn't really feel comfortable with the focus (and wondered whether I\nneeded<\/span> to test the\naccuracy of my focus screen<\/a>), so spent some time really concentrating\non trying to hit focus without worrying about composition so much....<\/p>\n\n

They seemed quite interested in having me take their picture, so the\nphotographer in me wanted to do it right; despite having 20kg worth of\ngear, I quickly<\/span> zoomed with my feet (moved) so that I could<\/span> frame the\nopportunity just right, concentrating on that which was most\nimportant....<\/p>\n\n

There were 2,132 twenty-year-olds in their formal archery hakama<\/i>,\nalong with ample family, friends, and spectators, so there was more than\nenough to keep me occupied.<\/p>\n\n
