After what's turned out to be a monochromatic year so\nfar<\/a>, I'm happy<\/span> to get some color back in my blog. The fall-foliage season is Kyoto's most glorious, and it runs a long<\/span> six or seven weeks, so\nI've got more fodder for posts than I could<\/span> actually process, so I'll dip in for today's post about a stroll<\/span> around Kyoto's Mt. Yoshida\nthat I did<\/span> with some friends\n(St\u00e9phane Barbery<\/a>,\nNicolas Joannin<\/a>,\nand Paul Barr<\/a>) last month.<\/p>\n\n

I've posted about this area many times, starting in “Discovering Kyoto's Mt.\nYoshida<\/a>” several years ago after St\u00e9phane first introduced the area to\nme. We both live<\/span> within walking distance, but I'd not even known about it\nuntil he showed me, and on our visit last month St\u00e9phane again revealed new\nand amazing areas I'd not know about. St\u00e9phane is a wonderful<\/span> person to\nlead these kinds of exploratory strolls because he knows what's amazing but\nmerely leads you there, letting each area speak for itself.<\/p>\n\n

Mt. Yoshida may be small, but it is<\/i> a mountain,<\/span> so there are lots of steps...<\/p>\n\n

That shot reminds me of the shot of Paul walking in mud<\/a> last summer.<\/p>\n\n

Mt. Yoshida is not tall, but it gets you above the city so it's always offering nice views of the area...<\/p>\n\n

The pagoda is of the Shinnyodou Temple as seen here<\/a>, and\nthe large roof in the background is part of the Konkai Koumyou Temple (also\ncalled the Kurodani Temple).<\/p>\n\n

I spent quite a while trying to get a shot<\/span> of the leaf, mostly because I\nhad<\/span> to wait for the few moments when the sun popped out and backlit that\none leaf sticking up.<\/p>\n\n

In the end the results were not as good as I hoped,<\/span> but I'll share a couple<\/span> more versions of the same view,\none with a larger<\/span> field in focus, and one with the focus on the further point of the leaf...<\/p>\n\n

I often take all kinds of different versions of the same scene while\nexploring the possibilities, but I don't<\/span> often share more than one\nbecause one of the most important skills a photographer<\/span> can have is shot\nselection: knowing what not to share. (Considering that I posted<\/span>\n2,133 photos on my blog in 2011<\/a>,\nit's a skill<\/span> I don't<\/span> quite have, but then again, I'm a writer<\/span>, not a photographer.<\/span>)<\/p>\n\n

This next shot doesn't look like much within the confines of this post,\nbut it's a kind<\/span> of shot I like<\/span> as a desktop<\/span>-background picture. Most of the\nphoto is out of focus, but the top part that is in focus is apparent in the\nlarger version, and somehow it all just feels nice...<\/p>\n\n\n

I was able to suppress the desire to sub-caption that one with “(for the time being)<\/i>” because there's something really vibrant and alive about this one. It's the result<\/span> of my processing in Lightroom... the original, seen below for reference, is decidedly bland.<\/p>\n\n\n
