Rarely does a photo take my breath away, but this rendition by Paul Barr does it every time I come<\/span> across it. I don't<\/span> know what it is about it,\nbut if you'll excuse the pun, I'm really<\/span> drawn to it.<\/p>\n\n

Paul recently got an iPhone 4s, and to complement its camera he loaded a\nfew<\/span> photo-processing apps, and spent some time over coffee futzing with the\napps to get a feel<\/span> for them. He ended<\/span> up with a\njumbled<\/span> mix of results<\/a>, almost all of which are interesting (though one\nreally creeps me out), but the one above really strikes me as exceptional. I intend<\/span> to frame it for my wall.<\/p>\n\n

The temple building itself is fairly generic and I didn't<\/span> recognize it,\nbut it turns out to be from our trip to the Jingoji\nTemple<\/a> last month. Apparently I was<\/span> standing next to Paul when he took\nthe shot, though I was<\/span> in the process of photographing a different<\/span> building\nat the time.<\/p>\n\n

Paul isn't sure which app he used to process the photo, but suspects\nit's PhotoForge2<\/a>, an app that\nSt\u00e9phane Barbery<\/a> recommended to him.<\/p>\n\n

Paul normally shoots with a Nikon D3, but he was also using his iPhone at times because he wanted to get\nto know the iPhone camera. Frankly, after seeing\nthe low-light prowess of my Nikon D700<\/a> I can't<\/span> see myself\never using a point<\/span>-n-shoot like the iPhone except when I don't<\/span> have a “real” camera around, but Paul shows\nthat skill, patience, and perhaps some luck can go a very<\/span> long way.<\/p>\n\n

Regardless of the source of the photo, there's also Paul's inspired\nprocessing. Paul says that he doesn't know whether it's luck or genius\nthat he came up with this, but it's my guess that it's luck that allowed\nhim to get there, and genius that allowed him to stop there.<\/p>\n\n

I'd like to be able to do this kind of thing myself, but I'm scared for\nthe amount of time it would take, and how I'd feel about the outcome. I've\ndabbled a bit<\/span> with “artsy” processing from time to time, and usually feel\nthat by the time I'm done that it's started to get a bit<\/span> clich\u00e9. I think<\/span> it's just lack of artistic confidence: I'm a scientific<\/span> geeky guy, so “art”\nis totally foreign to me.<\/p>\n\n

I do very much like the “artsy” art I printed<\/span>\nfor my home office (photos processed via Corel Painter Essentials, as\nwritten about last\nyear<\/a> and in 2007<\/a>),\nand I think<\/span> the “Impressionism in Lightroom<\/a>”\nshots from last fall are impactful. Among other recent artsy-fartsy endeavors are\n“A Few<\/span> Stylized Shots from Bunny Island<\/a>” which I also<\/span> like,\nand “Context for the Bamboo-and-Leaf Photo, and Some Crazy Post-Processing<\/a>”\nwhich perhaps was more useful for the experience than the results.<\/p>\n\n

Then there's the whole realm of black & white processing, which is\nmuch more complex and artistically varied than you could possibly imagine\nif you've never really looked into it. I use it<\/span> sparingly (of note recently\nhere<\/a>, here<\/a>, here<\/a>, and here<\/a>), but if you\nwant to get an idea for just how complex it can be, watch Martin\nBailey's walk-through of Silver Efex Pro<\/a>, a B&W conversion\napplication by Nik Software. I have resisted<\/span> getting it because my head\nwould explode at all the possibilities, and I have<\/span> enough on my plate as it is.<\/p>\n\n\n
