I posted the other day about the wonderful and moody Kosanji Temple (\u9ad8\u5c71\u5bfa)<\/span><\/a>\n— commonly referred to, in error, as the “Kozanji” Temple — in\nthe north-west mountains of Kyoto. Part of the mood was the really dynamic\nweather... brilliantly sunny above the high canopy of the towering pines,\npunctuated by dark clouds and fits of spritzy rain. It had been<\/span> the same\nall day, including while at our earlier visit to the\nJingoji Temple (\u795e\u8b77\u5bfa)<\/span><\/a> a short<\/span> distance away.<\/p>\n\n

Leaving the cover of Kosanji and returning to the relative openness of\nthe area's parking lot, we got a new<\/span> appreciation for the dynamic mood.<\/p>\n\n

Photographically, the photo above is junk, but I include<\/span> it for the\nmemory of the striking nature of the tree, with bare branches so complex\nthat they appear to be full of bark-colored leaves at first glance. (Click through to the larger version\nand you'll be able to see quite a bit<\/span> of detail in the branches.)<\/p>\n\n

The tree was being lit up by the sun while the background trees were\nnot. I reminds<\/span> me of the Stark Tree<\/a> that I posted<\/span>\nin February, which I still<\/span> use as my laptop's desktop-background.<\/p>\n\n

Other trees nearby were still in their autumnal glory...<\/p>\n\n

It was perfect conditions for a rainbow,<\/span> and we watched for one on the\nway home. An adult<\/span> in the car (who will remain nameless to protect the\nguilty) suggested that in Japan rainbows happen only at 2pm. The physics<\/span> of\nrainbows requires that the sun be within a particular<\/span> ranges of angle, and\nthis doesn't necessarily include 2pm. The discussion<\/span> raged for a bit<\/span> before\nwe all got the joke: the Japanese word for rainbow, niji<\/i>, is a\nhomophone<\/span> with the word for “two o'clock”. Sigh. We hadn't thought of it as\na joke<\/span> at first because we aren't in elementary school. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, we eventually did see a rainbow<\/span> from the car...<\/p>\n\n

It had weakened considerably by the time I got<\/span> home...<\/p>\n\n

I wondered weather the dynamic afternoon light might translate to a spectacular<\/span> sunset, so I hiked<\/span> up to\nthe Shogunzuka overlook<\/a>, but was relatively disappointed in a nice<\/span> but uninspiring sunset...<\/p>\n\n
