On the way home from the park with Anthony, I noticed<\/span> preparations for\nthe new-year hatsumode<\/i><\/a> “first\nvisit to the shrine”. As happens<\/span> every new year, the street leading to the\nHeian Shrine will be closed off for several days, and the sidewalk lined\nwith food vendors.<\/p>\n\n

The preparations that I noticed were for the food-stall power supply,\nand if you'll forgive the obvious pun, it's shockingly unsafe.<\/p>\n\n

Basically, they took two singleton strands of insulated wire and strung\nthem over some bushes and then up through branches of the trees lining the\nsidewalk. These wires are used both to carry high-voltage current, and to\nsupport the weight of themselves and whatever hangs from them.<\/p>\n\n

At intervals, short segments of insulation were stripped and at these\nspots bare wires were hooked, leading down to in-wall outlets just hanging\nbare.<\/p>\n\n

I took these snaps while awkwardly holding my iPhone way above my head...\nsorry for the lack of quality. But with these<\/span> dangling overhead like this,\nthink about how they'll be used: you can't just shove a plug<\/span> into them\nbecause they're just hanging free, so someone will have to reach up, grab\nthe outlet tight, and if they're not electrocuted,\nshove the plug in. All I can<\/span> say is that gloves are highly suggested.<\/p>\n\n

Of course, there are no grounding wires; Japan generally doesn't have\nthem to begin with.<\/p>\n\n

Where the trees don't provide enough support, they built a sturdy<\/span> scaffolding to hold the dangerous wire safely away from the public:<\/p>\n\n
