I went<\/span> out to Fushimi Castle the other day with\nPaul Barr and Nicolas<\/a>, a\nFrench<\/span>\/American guy I met<\/span> briefly at Gion Matsuri<\/a> at the start\nof the summer when he noticed my big lens<\/a> and\nintroduced himself. Busy schedules prevented us from getting together until\nlast week when we made the short trip to south part of Kyoto to visit the\nFushimi\nCastle<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

It rained nonstop.<\/p>\n\n

We spent quite a while under the protection of the main gate just\nchatting, and snapping occasional pictures, such as the kusaridoi<\/i>\nrain gutter above. I can never<\/span> remember the name “kusaridoi<\/i>” without\nreferring to this\npost<\/a>. With the version above I was<\/span> going a bit<\/span> out on a limb,<\/span> but just\nfor safety also took a pedestrian<\/span> straight-up version, though it would have\nbeen better with more rain:<\/p>\n\n

The castle was built 50 years ago as a tourist<\/span> attraction, near the\nsite of where a castle<\/span> did stand in the late 1590s. The company<\/span> running it\napparently couldn't keep it going, so gave it to the city 10 years ago, so\nnow it's a park.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

It showed a lot of potential in the rain, and with its wealth of cherry\ntrees I'm sure it's wonderful in the spring, but it was hard to feel\ninspired when you're getting soaked.<\/p>\n\n

As it turns out, the rain was a blessing<\/span> because we were so miserable\nthat we decided to bail on photography, and we went to a coffee<\/span> shop and\nchatted for hours. Nicolas is a biologist<\/span> dealing with DNA sequencing or\nthe like. (My take-away from the conversation is that despite claims that\nthe human genome has been mapped, in reality not a single<\/span> strand of DNA has\never been sequenced... not one. Ever. But I digress<\/span>.)<\/p>\n\n

Nicolas took a\npicture<\/span> of me taking a picture<\/span> of him<\/a>, which only goes to show that not\nonly do we both act silly, we both look silly.<\/p>\n\n
