I included a pretty bamboo-and-leaf photo on my previous post<\/a>, even\nthough it wasn't related to the post, just to have something pretty, but I\ntend<\/span> to like to share stories\/context instead of just photos, so this post\nfills in that gap for that photo.<\/p>\n\n

Just outside the Ryoanji Temple is a path<\/span>\/sidewalk that leads to the\nnearby suburban sprawl, and along it was a nice<\/span> little area lined by\nbamboo fences separating the pedestrians from a small<\/span> area of leaf-covered\ngrass. Here's a picture<\/span> I happened<\/span> to have snapped from the same location I took<\/span> the bamboo\/leaf photo:<\/p>\n\n

The photo above is captioned literally: check out the largest\ndesktop-background version, and you'll just be able to make out the wisp\nof spider web holding up the leaf.<\/p>\n\n

In the background of these you can get a feeling<\/span> for a solid<\/span> bed of\norange maple leaves, and that's exactly what it was. I put the<\/span> camera on\nautofocus, reached straight out across the fence, aimed the camera blindly,\nand....<\/p>\n\n

I tend to shy away from heavy post processing, though I've dabbled in it more and more lately,\nsuch as in\n“Impressionism in Lightroom<\/a>”\nand its followup post<\/a>, or\nthis shot<\/a> from a week<\/span> ago, camo duck<\/a>\nfrom March, or “Dabbling in Some Fine-Art Printing for My Office<\/a>” from February.<\/p>\n\n

Well, the big blustery shot above takes the cake, but the effect caught\nmy eye while futzing around in Lightroom, so I spent<\/span> a few<\/span> minutes playing\nwith it, and here we are. I like how<\/span> it evokes (in me, at least) the sense\nthat autumn gives way to winter. It was a<\/span> really cold\/blustery day when I\ntook<\/span> the shot, so maybe that colors my view.<\/p>\n\n

Along the same heavy-processing lines, with this next one I tried<\/span> to go\nfor a plastic<\/span>\/fake look, almost as if the leaves were made out of some kind of candy.\nYou can't necessarily see the effect in the thumbnail, but if you click\nthrough to the larger version, a certain<\/span> fake feeling should become\napparent...<\/p>\n\n

I can't rightly tell you why I had a plastic<\/span> look in mind, but there's a\nwhole<\/span> lot of crazy Lightroom develop settings that went into it.<\/p>\n\n

And now for something really surprising: the\nprevious two photos are identical except for the fake vignette applied in\nLightroom, a heavy<\/span>\/tight white vignette in the first, and a slight<\/span>\/thin\ndark vignette in the second. Surprised? I was.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Back to reality, near the bamboo was a tuft<\/span> of the susuki<\/i> grass I\nlike<\/span> so much. I'd already<\/span> gotten plenty of the grass earlier in the outing\n(such as this\none<\/a> seen the other day), so here I went<\/span> a bit<\/span> more on the artsy-fartsy\nside...<\/p>\n\n

I would have liked a bit more contrast, but it's got an interesting mood.<\/p>\n

A bit later, Paul moved to the grass, so I took<\/span> another “context” shot...<\/p>\n\n

But it was hard to ignore the beauty... the light and the area were just gorgeous...<\/p>\n\n
