I was sort of amused to read “Stop\nAdvertising in Photo Magazines – Head West to the Web<\/a>” on Trey\nRatcliff's “Stuck in Customs<\/a>”\nphoto-travel blog, about how his $30,000 ad buy in some photography\nmagazines was a bust.<\/span> What caught my attention was not that print is dying,\nbut that here's a guy<\/span> with a blog<\/span> roughly as popular as mine doing $30,000\nad buys(!)<\/p>\n\n

I recall once he mentioned his pageviews and remember that they were\ncomparable to mine. In his recent<\/span> article, though, he lists the number of\nblog photos served per day, which is not quite a metric<\/span> I've ever thought\nabout (and when he compares his numbers to a magazine's<\/span> subscriber count,\nperhaps he should compare instead to the number of subscribers multiplied\nby the number of photos in each issue, but I digress<\/span>). Anyway, the stats\naverage out to about 160,000 photo-views per day, and I checked<\/span> mine and\nfound that it was about 120,000\/day for the same period; not quite the\nsame, but to the same order of magnitude.<\/p>\n\n

Of course, one should take into account that I put<\/span> a bazillion<\/span> photos of\nsuspect quality on most posts, and he puts only one, and that he actually\nsells a product<\/span> (something about HDR, which I don't<\/span> do<\/a>), so maybe\nthere's no real comparison to be made. And frankly, I don't<\/span> do comparisons\nanyway because my goal is not to be bigger or better or something-else-er\nthan someone else, or even to grow an audience. I just enjoy<\/span> sharing, and\nif other people at times enjoy what I share,<\/span> well, then I'm tickled\npink.<\/p>\n\n

At worst, I'll have all the articles to reread when I get<\/span> old, to share\nwith Anthony when he gets old enough, and God willing, to share with\ngrandkids. And that's not a bad<\/span> deal, if you ask me. But $30,000 ad buys!?\nMaybe I should<\/span> turn this into a business<\/span>?<\/p>\n\n

It's clear that Trey enjoys what he does with his blog, so that's great\nfor him, but I don't<\/span> have a disposition<\/span> that could enjoy this if I worried<\/span>\nabout metrics or cash flow or click-through rates, so I guess<\/span> I'll continue\nto bumble forward with posts about things dear to my heart, mostly family,\nphotography, and Kyoto.<\/p>\n\n

And speaking of that, the photo above, taken at a bamboo<\/span> fence along a path<\/span> on the same outing\nas the other day's \"A Cold,<\/span> Wet, Photogenic Visit To The Ryoanji Temple<\/a>,\nis unrelated to this post. I just think<\/span> it's pretty.<\/p>\n\n
