It's been about six years since I've been to the Ryoanji Temple (\u9f8d\u5b89\u5bfa)<\/span>\nin north-west Kyoto, but I think<\/span> of it fondly because Fumie and I went<\/span>\nthere twice in the early years after moving here (once in\nthe summer<\/a> of 2005, and again in the fall<\/a>), and because\nI've used this picture from\nthere<\/a> on my namecard for years.<\/p>\n\n

I stopped in again the other day with Paul Barr, but it was a miserable<\/span>\nday. It was the<\/span> first day of real winter cold, but I was<\/span> still dressed for\nautumn, and misty rain (ice\/snow?) was blowing in at times on strong gusty\nwinds. It made for<\/span> dynamic lighting, but I couldn't<\/span> use the camera easily\nwhen it was raining, and at all times I was<\/span> freezing due to lack of proper\npreparations.<\/p>\n\n

Still, in between the gusts of precipitation I could<\/span> grab a few<\/span> shots,\nand when it rained I warmed<\/span> up my hands in my coat, so I came<\/span> back with a\nfew<\/span> shots.<\/p>\n\n\n

Ryoanji is known for its\nrock garden<\/a>, but I prefer<\/span> its regular garden out front, which includes\na small<\/span> lake with a small<\/span> island near one edge. There's a small<\/span> bridge onto the island\nthat can be seen in the shot above of some of the lake's ducks.<\/p>\n\n

The lake offers plenty of the photogenic susuki<\/i> grass that I'm partial to..<\/p>\n\n

Those steps lead back from the inner temple and its rock garden, an area we didn't visit on this trip.<\/p>\n\n

Rather, we continued on the path that eventually leads around the lake...<\/p>\n\n

At this point in checking out my photos, I felt that<\/span> I had<\/span> enough for a\npost,<\/span> so I haven't<\/span> looked further yet. I also realized<\/span> that almost all of\nthem would make nice desktop background images, so I just<\/span> went ahead and\ngave them all that treatment.<\/p>\n\n
