It won't rise during\nthe 5:00 hour again until late July.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nThe picture to the right is from my <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-03-25\/165\">GPS unit<\/a>, which can\ncompute the theoretical sunrise\/sunset data for any point on earth. <span class='nobr'>The point<\/span> in question today is my apartment.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nAll this early sunrise stuff is unfortunate because Anthony tends to rise\nwith the sun, and (<small>now here's the unfortunate part<\/small>) <span class='nobr'>I\ntend<\/span> to rise with my son. <span class='nobr'>I'm on morning<\/span> duty, so when he does his\ndoody, it's me he wakes up to clean things up (change diaper, or wipe\nbutt).\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nThis early waking-up stuff goes on despite my best attempts to hermetically\nseal his room from all photons. <span class='nobr'>His body just<\/span> seems to know it's light\noutside.\n\n<\/p>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/_JEF014698.jpg\" width=\"340\" height=\"647\"\nalt=\"Anthony all ready to head off to preschool\"\nclass=\"img_left\"\nid=\"iJEF014698\"\ntitle=\"Anthony all ready to head off to preschool\"\/>\n\n<br clear=\"right\"\/>\n\n<p>\n\nOn the left, we have the young man himself.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nAfter having been up for three hours, he's about to head out to <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-04-13\/178\">preschool<\/a>. <span class='nobr'>He's got his<\/span>\nbackpack, a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bento\">bento<\/a> lunch\nFumie made for him this morning (in the red Curious George bag), and his\nas-of-late most-prized possession, <span class='nobr'>a thermos<\/span> full of tea.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nHe's very excited about &#8220;bento days&#8221; like today. Starting next\nweek he'll bring his lunch every day, but so far the days have generally\nbeen short (ending before noon), with only <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> days like today that run\nlong enough to need to have lunch there. <span class='nobr'>The whole<\/span> point is that they're\nstarting slowly, since many kids aren't used to being away from Mom.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nWhen he got home (Fumie took him and picked him up), we talked at length\nabout the bento. <span class='nobr'>As part of<\/span> his lunchbox he has spoon, fork, and\nchopsticks, but he said that he used only the chopsticks. That's hard to\nbelieve, but the clean cutlery bore that out. (He did mention later that\nhe'd used his fingers for the mushrooms.) He enjoyed it very much, and as\nsuch, we enjoyed hearing about it.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nFumie puts a lot of work into the planning and execution of these lunches,\nbecause she knows that'll make or break the whole school experience for\nhim. <span class='nobr'>I think<\/span> she's hit <span class='nobr'>a home<\/span> run.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> The sun rose at <b>4:49<\/b> this morning here in Kyoto. <b>Ugh.<\/b> <\/p><p> It was the first time so far this year that the sun rose before 5:00am.
