I got a call today that the nearby Eikando Temple was bathed in some\ngorgeous late-afternoon peeking-through-some-storm-clouds sun, so I thought<\/span>\nI'd go and take a look.<\/span> It's always absolutely amazing<\/a> during\nthe fall-foliage season, even in the rain<\/a>, so I knew<\/span> I\ncouldn't<\/span> lose, but it became all the better when Anthony said he wanted to\njoin me. Normally he couldn't care less about anything like that, but for\nsome reason wanted to try taking pretty pictures.<\/p>\n\n

So, I grabbed<\/span> my Nikon D700 for me and a point<\/span>-n-shoot compact for him,\nand we rode our bikes over.<\/p>\n\n

He took that first shot just before going in, showed me the\nsun-streaming-in look on the back of the camera, then cautioned that it\nwould take him a while<\/span> to warm up. Hah! Where does a nine<\/span>-year-old come up\nwith this stuff?<\/p>\n\n

It turns out that we had missed the glorious light, and even in the\nshots above the sun was mostly obscured by clouds; we never did see it, having\nstayed until after sunset without it making another appearance.<\/p>\n\n

Still, it was very nice.<\/p>\n\n

He felt stifled with the compact camera and wanted to use mine, so we switched...<\/p>\n\n

I had a cold last week and didn't shave, but got come compliments on the\nslightly scruffy beard, so since then have merely been trimming it, but\nwow, it seems to make me look homeless in photos. Earlier today St\u00e9phane\nBarbery sent me a\nphoto<\/span> he took of me yesterday<\/a> after I'd hiked up a hill<\/span> with a very<\/span>\nheavy lens (as I described<\/span>\nyesterday<\/a>), so I was<\/span> a mess<\/span> to begin with not even considering the\nhomeless-esque beard.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, Anthony went off with the camera, taking care with each shot,\nthinking about focus and composition. I have no<\/span> idea where he learned any\nof this, except perhaps from his photography of his own\nLego play<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

As nice as it was, this year's colors have been much weaker, and you can\ncompare with this\nshot last year<\/a> to see that today was nothing compared to a sunny<\/span> day\nduring a year<\/span> with stronger colors.<\/p>\n\n

He seemed to know what he was doing (he was showing me his shots), so I\nasked<\/span> him to take a portrait,<\/span> but I should<\/span> have adjusted my hoodie, and I\nshould<\/span> have shaved.<\/p>\n\n

I'm just amazed at what he did with focus and composition... like I\nsaid,<\/span> I have no<\/span> idea where it came from. I posted<\/span> about half of the photos\nhe took, so it's not like he was carpet bombing and just lucked across some\nthat seemed nice.
