My cold definitely seems to be over, so today I made<\/span> the trek to the deep-mountain southwest corner of Kyoto City,\nto the Yoshiminedera Temple (\u5584\u5cef\u5bfa)<\/span> that\nSt\u00e9phane Barbery<\/a> introduced me to last year. I made two<\/span> trips last year, producing enough story and photographic material to fill dozens of blog posts,\nbut being lazy I've so far posted only a few<\/span> (here<\/a>,\nhere<\/a>,\nand most recently here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n

Arriving today with Paul Barr after an hour-long scooter ride, and getting the first view of the entrance seen above, I was struck<\/span> by three things:<\/p>\n\n

  1. The fall colors are much weaker than last year.<\/li>\n
  2. Even weaker, it's still a sight<\/span> to inspire awe.<\/li>\n
  3. And wow<\/i>, the polarizing filter makes such a huge<\/i> difference.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n

    Several weeks ago I posted “Heading Out To Photograph The\nFall Foliage? Don't Forget The Polarizer Filter<\/a>” using examples taken\nhere, and arriving today I found<\/span> myself compelled to take more with\/without\npairs of shots. The difference<\/span> is striking, but already well illustrated in\nthe previous post, so I won't<\/span> add more today.<\/p>\n\n

    The whole temple complex is on a mountainside<\/span> that sprawls more vertically than horizontally,\nand in that vein the entrance “hut” (as tall as a four<\/span>-story building) is a long<\/span> set of stairs above\nthe parking lot. The intervening<\/span> slope is covered with hedge, out of which a sprig<\/span> of red berries emerged,\nso I thought<\/span> I'd get artsy-fartsy and try aiming up the slope to get the foreground berries in focus, leaving\nthe background out of focus...<\/p>\n\n

    The berries are so sufficiently unsubstantial that one may not even notice them, so the effect I envisioned<\/span> didn't\nmaterialize at all, but I do<\/span> like something about this (out-of-focus) background, so in the end I like<\/span> the shot.<\/p>\n\n

    Switching to a tighter zoom (125mm instead of 50mm) helps bring out the effect I was<\/span> after, but the impact\nisn't quit there...<\/p>\n\n

    And we hadn't even entered yet; inside, it got much<\/i> nicer still, but that's\nbest left for another dozen posts, if I ever<\/span> get unlazy.<\/p>\n\n

    On the way out three hours later after the sun had set behind the\nmountain, I thought<\/span> to snap a picture<\/span> of the entrance hut itself...<\/p>\n\n

    Passing through there on the way in, you pay 500 yen (about US $6.50) to\nenter, and if ever there was a temple<\/span> and season that was worth it, this is\nit.<\/p>\n\n

    Some of the maples are still absolutely green, without even the\nslightest hint of fall color yet, so this season is certainly weird, but\nthat bodes well for another trip. The temple<\/span> faces the morning sun, and\nopens at 8am, so if I go<\/span> again, I'll try to get there early.<\/p>\n\n
