Having recovered from a mild but lingering cold, I went out<\/span> for some\nlite temple\/shrine exploration in western Kyoto with Paul Barr yesterday. The autumn<\/span> colors are late and weak this year, but it's always fun to\nexplore new nooks and crannies of Kyoto, so I enjoyed<\/span> it.<\/p>\n\n

There's a tradition of sake (rice wine) companies sending donations to\nshrines in exchange for prominent display of their patronage, and the barrels on display\nat this particular shrine we came across were particularly large.<\/p>\n\n

I'm not really sure what the above thing was about, but I suspect<\/span> it has\nto do with fortune telling. The girls<\/span> were giggling the whole time. She\nmissed, but they clearly got their presumably small fee's worth of fun.<\/p>\n\n\n

After leaving that shrine, we putzed around the back roads looking for\nlunch, and happened upon a simple<\/span> cafe with good food. I snapped<\/span> a picture<\/span>\nof the entrance just to mark the location (because my photos are\ngeoencoded, as per the map link under each photo)....<\/p>\n\n

We could see on the map that a large temple was not far, so we headed\nover, but it turns out to have been the Moss\nTemple<\/a>, which I have<\/span> no interest in seeing and requires a reservation<\/span> a\nweek<\/span> in advance anyway, but nearby we happened across the fairly-hidden\n“Bamboo Temple”, still apparently undiscovered by the hordes of tourists\nbuzzing nearby...<\/p>\n\n

Then we thought to head up towards the main area of Arashiyama and seek\nout the remote temple seen in this picture<\/a>\nthat I posted<\/span> two months ago, from a lookout<\/span> on a mountain<\/span>-top park.<\/p>\n\n

From the main road it's a pleasant 1.1km walk along the river to get to the stairs\nthat lead up to the temple, though in our case it was a pleasant<\/span> 1.1km scooter ride. \ud83d\ude42\nThen we left the scooter and started up the mountain...<\/p>\n\n

These are common in rustic temples and shrines, and I love<\/span> them and have\nposted photos from them many times, but this one was particularly low so\nthat I could<\/span> get easy access with my macro lens...<\/p>\n\n

There wasn't much in the way of fall colors, but a few<\/span> bland tinges here\nand there made for a nice<\/span> backdrop from time to time...<\/p>\n\n

If you look carefully at the photo above, you can see people at the top\ncenter. It's from there<\/span> that I took<\/span> the “remote temple”\nphoto<\/a> two months ago, and now this photo is the reverse angle of that\none.<\/p>\n\n

The “remote temple” is pretty rustic, in a pleasant<\/span> way...<\/p>\n\n

... and offers a very nice view of the river, the mountains, and northern Kyoto, though the\nview of the city is washed out in this shot...<\/p>\n\n

Back down at the bottom of the steps where I'd left the scooter, we saw\nemployees standing on a dock<\/span> waiting to meet a boat<\/span> carrying customers to a place<\/span>\nwith the name\n \u661f\u306e\u3084 (hoshinoya<\/i>),\nwhich I assumed<\/span> to be a pricey<\/span> restaurant....<\/p>\n\n

It turns out to be an inn, spa, and restaurant, and that “pricey” was an\nunderstatement. Its web site<\/a>\nlists dinner starting at $200 per person, and the three-day spa course\nruns $2,200, though that doesn't include a 10<\/span>% service charge, nor\neven accommodations, which one supposes must be equally spendy.<\/p>\n\n

Riding the quiet, mostly-empty path back to the main road did not\nprepare me for the scene once I arrived.<\/span> It hits the<\/span> main road at the\nwestern end of the famous Togetsukyo Bridge (\u6e21\u6708\u6a4b,<\/span> seen here<\/a> and more\nrecently here<\/a>). The whole<\/span> area was positively swarming with people and traffic and unfun. I much prefer<\/span> out-of-the-way places that my scooter gives me access to.<\/p>\n\n

Today I'm off to Yoshiminedera<\/a>. I still<\/span> haven't looked at most of the photos I took<\/span> last year, but it's nice to\nhave them in reserve because this year's colors are so weak, I may not<\/span> end\nup with anything today.
