I can't believe it's been a week since I last<\/span> posted... time has just\nevaporated as I've been working on a new<\/span> Lightroom project<\/a>. Taking a break<\/span>\nfrom that, and realizing that Kyoto is just a few<\/span> weeks from the start of\nits most glorious fall-foliage season, I thought<\/span> I'd dip into my archives\nfrom last year for some “Fall Foliage Preview” shots for this year. I was dumbfounded<\/span> to find several thousand photos from a bunch<\/span> of outings that\nI'd not even looked at yet. Always just too busy.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, I was futzing<\/span> with a throw<\/span>-away photo in Lightroom, applying\nsome extreme develop settings (definitely beyond “tweak” that I jokingly<\/span>\nuse above), and came up with some highly-affected photos with a vibe<\/span> I\nlike.<\/span> It's difficult<\/span> to see in the tiny version above (click through for a\nlarger<\/span> version, or try one of the desktop-background versions), but the\nvarious changes conspire to make it look more like an impressionist\npainting than a photograph.<\/span> It's not quite<\/span> like what one can get with\nCorel Painter Essentials<\/i> (as described earlier this year in “Dabbling in Some\nFine-Art Printing for My Office<\/a>”) but it's fast, easy, and can be\ninteresting.<\/p>\n\n

This was the second picture I took on a visit<\/span> to the Eikando Temple on a cloudy<\/span> day in mid November last year,\na short<\/span> walk from my house here in Kyoto. That temple is famous for its autumn colors\n(as evidenced in\n“Holy Cow, the Gardens at Kyoto's Eikando Temple are Gorgeous!<\/a>”\nfrom a few<\/span> years ago, and countless other posts over the years that present themselves\nwhen you click on the “nearby photos<\/a>” link under any of these pictures.)<\/p>\n\n

This kind of extreme processing can get old quickly, so I don't<\/span> want to\noverdo it, but I had<\/span> great fun using the settings as a base<\/span> when playing\nwith some other photos, so today's post are some of those results.<\/p>\n\n

They all look much better when viewed full screen... I think<\/span> it's the combination of\nfine detail you get with a large<\/span> view with the overall vibe that makes them appealing.<\/p>\n\n

I mentioned that I had thousands of photos from last fall that I hadn't<\/span>\neven looked at yet; in rummaging through them to select the photos above, I got only<\/span> about 2% into the batch before I felt<\/span> I had<\/span> enough for this post\n(like I said,<\/span> I didn't<\/span> want to overdo it). 98% remain uninspected, so I'd\nbetter get cracking if I want<\/span> to get through them before this year's season\nstarts.<\/p>\n\n\n

I'll leave with one last example with processing along the same lines, but whose result has a more<\/span> subdued vibe...<\/p>\n\n
