As I mentioned the other day in “More From the Rice\nHarvest<\/a>”, I made a<\/span> quick trip back on Monday to the farming villages\nthat I'd visited the week\nbefore<\/a> to offer prints to the nice farmer lady<\/a> I'd\nhad the pleasure to chat with.<\/p>\n\n

On the way there, I went through<\/span> the tiny village with the wind-damaged\nrice crop seen\nhere<\/a>. All that rice<\/span> had now been harvested...<\/p>\n\n

I was shocked at how the color of the spider lilies had changed. Just a\nweek<\/span> earlier, they were deeply powerful red (as seen here<\/a>), but\nnow they were starting to look washed out...<\/p>\n\n

Turning around from this point to look up the road a bit,<\/span> I noticed<\/span> a\nsmall<\/span> side path that led to a cluster<\/span> of perhaps three houses (it's a small<\/span>\nvillage, with a total<\/span> of about four houses). The building<\/span> at the corner is\nfor storage, and I'd driven by a number<\/span> of times without even noticing it,\nand what a shame<\/span> that is... just look at its foundation...<\/p>\n\n

These days this kind of foundation would be built with cinder block, or\nperhaps rusty iron legs fronted by corrugated metal. Ugh. As it is<\/span>, it's\njust beautiful.<\/p>\n\n

Stepping up the path a bit, the view continues much the same into the\nmaze of paths serving what's up there: a few<\/span> houses and their respective\nbarns and storage buildings, and a small<\/span> temple.<\/p>\n\n

The wall provided a home for a big black\/yellow\/red spider...<\/p>\n\n

These spiders, which can be several inches across, are everywhere<\/i>\nin the mountains around here. We saw a<\/span> bazillion of them last month at the Fushimi Inari\nShrine<\/a>, and any time I venture<\/span> beyond the edge of the city.\nThey're apparently harmless to humans, and good for gardens.<\/p>\n\n

I eventually<\/span> continued on my way for the short\ndistance over the pass into Nara Prefecture, to the village with the lady I\nwas<\/span> looking for. Most of the rice was now harvested, and for some reason\nthe old dry stocks were formed into various decorative patterns...<\/p>\n\n

When I got to the cluster of a few dozen houses, I got off<\/span> my scooter\nwith the intent to show her photo around to find her, but lo and behold,\nshe just happen to be walking by at that very moment, pushing a wheelbarrow<\/span>\non her way to her garden...<\/p>\n\n

I didn't want to bother her much so left her with the photos and my\nthanks, but she invited me to stop by again sometime, and I'm sure I\nwill.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Earlier in the day, on the way at the edge of the city before diving into the\nmountains, I came across<\/span> a nice<\/span> house with deep-grained wood siding that\nwas at right angles to where the sun was at the moment, leaving the edges\nof the highest grain in bright sunlight, and the rest in shadow. I thought<\/span> it might make an interesting desktop-background image....<\/p>\n\n
