{"id":1860,"date":"2011-10-07T11:30:11","date_gmt":"2011-10-07T02:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2011-10-07\/1860"},"modified":"2011-11-07T17:00:44","modified_gmt":"2011-11-07T08:00:44","slug":"on-why-the-iphone4s-is-a-disappointment-and-a-on-steve-jobs-greatest-failure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2011-10-07\/1860","title":{"rendered":"On Why the iPhone 4s is a Disappointment, and on Steve Jobs&#8217; Greatest Failure"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<div class='resize_warning' id='arw1860'>\n<b>NOTE<\/b>: Images with an <img class='raw' width='19' height='18' src='\/i\/s\/red_zoomup.gif'\/> icon next to them have been artificially shrunk to better fit your screen; click the icon to restore them, in place, to their regular size.\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Like many eagerly awaiting an <b>iPhone 5<\/b> announcement, <span class='nobr'>I was disappointed<\/span> the other day when Apple announced the <b class='nobr'>iPhone\n4s<\/b>. <span class='nobr'>In thinking<\/span> about the logical response to my disappointment, asking\n&#8220;would <span class='nobr'>I have<\/span> been happier had they named the new phone <i>iPhone\n5<\/i>?&#8221; the answer is &#8220;no&#8221; because bumping up the number from 4 to 5\nimplies <span class='nobr'>a revolution<\/span> of some sort, and that's not present in the newly-announced phone.<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;So what kind of new revolutionary features were you hoping for?&#8221; you\nmight ask, and <span class='nobr'>I think<\/span> the answer is telling about why Apple is the success\nit is: <span class='nobr'>I was<\/span> looking forward not to some specific bell or whistle that <span class='nobr'>I\nalready<\/span> knew <span class='nobr'>I wanted,<\/span> but to the features that <span class='nobr'>I didn't<\/span> even know <span class='nobr'>I\nwanted,<\/span> would probably not be interested in when first hearing about them, but\nlike so many steps along the way since the iPod, after <span class='nobr'>a year<\/span> won't know\nhow <span class='nobr'>I could<\/span> have lived without them. That's Apple's genius.<\/p>\n\n<p style='margin-top:50px'>And though it may not be popular to say\nsomething unkind about Steve Jobs these days, while it's true he's <span class='nobr'>a genius<\/span>\nbeyond modern compare, <span class='nobr'>I have never<\/span> been able to forget the story of how he\nshirked his responsibility as <span class='nobr'>a man.<\/span>.. as <span class='nobr'>a decent<\/span> human... in not taking\nresponsibility for the first child he fathered. <span class='nobr'>He impregnated<\/span> his girl,\nthen walked away with a &#8220;not my problem&#8221;. This was not <span class='nobr'>a momentary<\/span> lapse in\njudgment during <span class='nobr'>a moment<\/span> of panic.... he spent years actively being <span class='nobr'>a jerk<\/span>\nto mother of his child, and <span class='nobr'>I think<\/span> it's deeply telling about what kind of\nman he was.<\/p>\n\n<p>In design and business he's an unmitigated genius, but not so much on\nthe personal-ethics front. <span class='nobr'>I can appreciate<\/span> his good points, but the\nunadulterated praise saturating the web seems universal in trying to\ncanonize him for sainthood. <span class='nobr'>He was a<\/span> man, and like all men, he had\nfailings. <span class='subtle nobr'>(All women have failings as well, with\nthe exception of my wife, mother, and mother-in-law, of course.)<\/span><\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Like many eagerly awaiting an <b>iPhone 5<\/b> announcement, I was disappointed the other day when Apple announced the <b class='nobr'>iPhone 4s<\/b>.
