Mike Bennett, who hired me into Yahoo! in 1997 and who was my manager\nfor the duration of my eight-year tenure there, stopped by Kyoto the other\nday, and we got together for the visit to the Fushimi Inari shrine\n\n (\u4f0f\u898b\u7a32\u8377\u5927\u793e)<\/span>\n\nthat I mentioned<\/span><\/a>\nin my previous post.<\/p>\n\n

Mike's girlfriend, Lauren, had an earlier business trip to Japan, so he\njoined her for some travel after. Lauren's sister and dad also came.<\/p>\n\n

As I reported in my\nfirst post about this shrine<\/a> several years ago, it has amazing mountain\npaths lined with thousands of devotional gates...<\/p>\n\n\n

I hadn't seen Mike and Lauren since about 2004, and had never met Lauren's sister and dad, so the day was a real<\/span> treat for me. We'd gotten<\/span> together a bit<\/span> earlier in the week for a trip<\/span> to the top of Kyoto Tower (seen at the top\nof this post<\/a>, and from afar on numerous posts, including\nhere<\/a>, here<\/a>, and here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n

There, enjoying the commanding view made all the better by the clear air\nleft after Typhoon #12\nblew through<\/a>, we were discussing places to visit when an\noverly-talkative tourist butted in suggesting the Fushimi Inari Shrine.\nIndeed, now that you mention it, it's hard to go wrong there, so that's what\nwe did.<\/p>\n\n

A large part of my enjoyment in visiting with them was to see their reaction as the place unfolded before them...<\/p>\n\n

Mosquitoes can be as ferocious here as anywhere, but they completely left\nme and Mike alone for the more flavorful delights of Lauren and her family,\nwho were getting eaten alive at a rapid<\/span> pace. So it was<\/span> with great\nappreciation that the owner of one of the small cafes along the way took\npity and assisted them with some bug spray...<\/p>\n\n

Besides the bugs that bit, there were plenty of huge spiders on display,\nwith appropriately-impressive webs...<\/p>\n\n

It had been cool after the typhoon blew through, but this day it was hot\nand ridiculously humid, so with that and time ticking away, we turned\naround at about the half-way point and headed back down.<\/p>\n\n
