Some friends are in town, and I joined<\/span> them on a visit<\/span> to the Fushimi Inari Shrine in south-west Kyoto this morning. I'd last visited<\/span> three years ago (see “Kyoto's Dazzling Fushimi Inari Shrine<\/a>”,\nand followups\nhere<\/a>,\nhere<\/a>,\nand here<\/a>),\nand it seems that much has changed since: it's undergoing a massive<\/span> renovation.<\/p>\n\n

The new paint was positively blinding in its richness, including the\nmulti-colored detail seen in the first photo. I think<\/span> I prefer<\/span> the\nweather-beaten look that centuries tend to put on wooden structures, but the\nfresh-paint brilliance today was interesting and (for me so far) unique.<\/p>\n\n

As it happened, as we arrived, they were taking the wraps off a newly<\/span>-installed statue...<\/p>\n\n\n
