In the few days that I've been clawing back from a nasty<\/span> cold, a couple<\/span>\nof folks that I chatted<\/span> with during Kyoto's big Gion Matsuri festival last\nweek have sent me copies of photos they took of me. As I described<\/span> in\n“A Thin<\/span>\nSlice of Big Crowds at Kyoto's Gion Matsuri Festival<\/a>”, I brought<\/span> a small<\/span> stool to raise me a bit<\/span> above the considerable crowds, and with my\nNikkor 300mm f\/2<\/a> on a\nmonopod,<\/span> shot the festivities. I've much left to post, but ones already up\ninclude a bit<\/span> from day 2<\/a>, some from day 3<\/a>, a\nsequence<\/span> that I think<\/span> really highlights what the lens is\ngood at<\/a>, and a different<\/span> kind of set from a special day-4 event<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Folks are not accustomed to seeing such a big<\/span> lens, so they approach\nwith smiles and curiosity, perhaps more so because the person with the lens\nis a big<\/span> foreigner. Many ask whether they can take my photo, to which I\nreply<\/span> “of course”, or if they're close enough to chat, “of course, no need\nto ask”.<\/p>\n\n

I particularly appreciated when camera-savvy folks asked about the lens\n(hint: if they say “wow, big lens!” instead of “big camera!”, they're\ncamera savvy \ud83d\ude42 ). One such camera<\/span>-savvy photographer got up close with a\nfish<\/span>-eye lens, so I had<\/span> to hand him my card and ask for a copy.<\/span> Kindly,\nhe replied, and I find<\/span> out that he's Fukushima-san, a professional<\/span> photographer\nfrom just outside of Osaka. Thanks Fukushima-san!<\/p>\n\n

The next day, among those I chatted with was the group of international\nresearchers I\nmentioned<\/span> before<\/a>, and they collectively sent me a few<\/span> shots.<\/p>\n\n\n

They thought the lens (or me) was sufficiently silly (impressive?) enough to try to sneak a shot<\/span> while walking by, but I “caught” one...<\/p>\n\n

As they left, they snapped a shot of a pair<\/span> of girls that approached\nasking about the camera. (Like I said,<\/span> the lens has its benefits \ud83d\ude09 ).<\/p>\n\n

It was just getting too dark by this time, so I put<\/span> the lens away in\npreference to finding a beer.<\/span> All the shots<\/span> above are unnaturally bright to\ncompensate for the closing darkness, but one last shot before I moved<\/span> on\nshows more closely what it was like at the time...<\/p>\n\n
