{"id":182,"date":"2006-04-20T23:26:20","date_gmt":"2006-04-20T14:26:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2006-04-20\/182"},"modified":"2007-04-10T00:25:12","modified_gmt":"2007-04-09T15:25:12","slug":"cherry-blossom-finale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2006-04-20\/182","title":{"rendered":"Cherry Blossom Finale"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<p>\nWhen a cherry tree starts to give up its petals, it does so in great bursts\nand flurries. <span class='nobr'>A puff of<\/span> wind will come along, and every darn petal will\nspring into the air in <span class='nobr'>a veritable<\/span> supernova of off-white pink that becomes\n<span class='nobr'>a localized<\/span> blizzard as it swirls and dissipates in all directions. Gravity\neventually wins, and the ground becomes <span class='nobr'>a thick<\/span> bed of blossoms sometimes\nseveral inches thick.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nIt's beautiful and mesmerizing, but the most amazing thing about it is that\nafter every petal has been lost to that breeze, the tree remains as heavily\nladen as ever. <span class='nobr'>It's as if<\/span> the blossoms for the blizzard of petals had\nmaterialized out of nowhere, separate and unrelated to those affixed to the\ntree for your longer-term viewing pleasure.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nIt certainly defies all logic, but that's how it is.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nLike watching hair grow, you never see <span class='nobr'>a change<\/span> in <span class='nobr'>a tree's<\/span> petals over the\nshort term, but in the longer term the tree inexplicably, inexorably,\ninevitability turns from white to green. This year, <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-04-08\/175\">as I've mentioned before<\/a>,\neach tree seems to be going at its own pace, but all have at least started\nthe transformation now.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nAnyway, after our recent trip to <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-04-18\/181\">the park<\/a>, Anthony and <span class='nobr'>I\nwere<\/span> passing by the area were <span class='nobr'>I took<\/span> <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-04-18\/180\">that night shot<\/a> I'd posted\nrecently when we were greeted with one of the whirlwinds of blossoms. <span class='nobr'>I had my<\/span> camera with me, but <span class='nobr'>I wasn't<\/span> fast\/good enough to get <span class='nobr'>a picture<\/span> that did\nit justice.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nHere's one that I did get, which shows just <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> petals in flight, and <span class='nobr'>a\ndecidedly<\/span> getting-greener tree:\n\n<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"img_center\"><a href=\"\/i\/_JEF014215.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/_JEF014215_sm.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"698\"\nalt=\"cherry tree in Kyoto, Japan, losing its cherry blossoms\"\nborder=\"0\"\nclass=\"raw\"\nid=\"iJEF014215\"\ntitle=\"cherry tree in Kyoto, Japan, losing its cherry blossoms\"\/><\/a><br\/><font color=\"#C0C0C0\" size=\"-1\">(click to\nexpand)<\/font><\/div>\n\n<p>\n\nIt's interesting to note that the white path in the background is black\nasphalt, made white by <span class='nobr'>a thin<\/span> layer of petals (we've had <span class='nobr'>a lot<\/span> of rain\nrecently, putting <span class='nobr'>a damper,<\/span> literally, on the petal accumulation). <span class='nobr'>It's taken<\/span> from just about exactly the same spot as the aforementioned <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-04-18\/180\">night shot<\/a>, but looking\nthe opposite direction. <span class='nobr'>You can see<\/span> much less an accumulation in the night\nshot, which was taken not long after rain had cleared everything away, <span class='nobr'>a\ngood<\/span> 40 hours prior to this one.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> When a cherry tree starts to give up its petals, it does so in great bursts and flurries.
